CHAPTER 27: GETTING OUT
I was tired of this house, tired of doing nothing but going to school and coming straight back "home". It was already past midnight and I was just in my bed staring at the ceiling. If only I could leave. I shot up in my bed. If only I could leave! Of course!
I grabbed my suitcase, that was still yet to be unpacked and I very quietly put on some pants and threw my pajamas inside before zipping the suitcase up. Thankfully the house wasn't squeaky so I tiptoed over to the door and reached my hand toward the doorknob. Quietly, so very quietly, I turned the knob. My nose was the first thing out the door, then slowy I peeked the rest of my head out. There was no one in sight.
Still on tippy toes, I walked over to George's and Julia's bedroom. Before I had even reached the room, I heard a loud snore escape from the bedroom, presumably from George. Just to be sure that they were sleeping, I looked inside. Sure enough, they were both sound asleep, or at least it looked like it.
I ran back to my room on my toes, careful not to make any sudden noises. A thought came over me. It was snowing. How was I going to get anywhere in the snow. I sat down on my bed, thinking and scheming. If I remembered correctly, there was a little restaurant just a few ways down that was open for 24 hours. I would go there and call Ryan to come and get me. He had already gone to sleep, but I could wake him up. Desperate times I told myself, desperate times.
Within the next few minutes I was already at the door. I reached for the door and in a second it was unlocked and open. A piercing noise made my heart stop beating.
Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep
Idiot Beth. An alarm you idiot, didn't you notice?
Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep
I scanned around frantically and threw my suitcase in a closet. Then quicker than ever I ran to the living room, jumped on the couch and thank goodness there was a blanket because I threw that over my body and I laid limp over the couch.
Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep
The sound of footsteps was heard. Running steps. I put my hands on top of my head and violently shook my hair. Then I went limp again.
Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep
They finally got to the living room and I made sure my bottom half stayed under the blanket at all times. I shot up as soon as they came to view.
"Guys what happened? Why did the alarm go off?"
They looked at me strangely.
Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep
"George!" Julia said loudly, with her fingers on her temples.
He turned the alarm off. "Why were you sleeping on the couch young lady?"
I coughed, but it came out more squeaky than I had intended. "It's more comfortable." A boldface lie that anyone could see right through, seeing as how the couch was as hard as a rock.
"Mhm." That was all Julia said, her hand on her face, deep in thought. "You didn't see anyone come in?"
"Nuh uh. So why would it have gone off? What if there is someone in here?" My last question came out in a barely audible whisper. I held the blanket up to my chin, widened my eyes, and looked around like a scared child.
George ran his hands down his face. "I'll check."
Julia looked straight at me. "It's fine George, we would have heard by now if there was. It was probably the wind. It wont't happen again. Trust me." She leaned in. "It WON'T happen again."
