Today is the day of the aptitude test. I fling my eyes open in a panic- what if I get Factionless. I hear Mum and dad talking about me – “what if she is one of us four, what if someone finds out?” mum is in a blinded state of panic dad is trying to calm her down “it will be fine if she chooses dauntless I can remove the data, if she moves to Erudite then we can panic, but if the time comes we will die for her Tris” Mum nods her head what did they mean. I walk in like I didn’t hear anything and see mum quickly wipe away her tears. The oven beeps and the smell of chocolate cupcakes wafts around the house, yum my favourite.
Dad leads me down to the train and kisses me on the forehead “good luck sweetie, I love you” peoples first impressions of my dad is so wrong people and generally scared mean whilst to me he is the sweetest person in the world my dad is my best friend.
I sit there and wait with members of my faction until my name is called “Madeleine Eaton” I step out of my seat and pull my leather jacket down. I start to shake a bit, I am terrified, not only that but it is an amity giving me the test amity talk drives me insane. “Drink this” she says handing me something that looks like a shot glass filled with a clear liquid “why what is it” I’m curious as to what I’m about to drink “just drink it” wow I never thought an amity would get annoyed with me erudite yes, amity not so much. I throw the liquid to the back of my mouth and swallow quickly.
When I open my eyes I’m am in a dark room all I can see is some cheese and a knife “choose” what “why” I question “just choose” wow the simulation is getting angry. “Fine” I pick up the knife I have been trained and actually know how to use the knife. A dog runs out of nowhere- I can’t kill a dog, I’ve always wanted a pet dog, I slowly lower the knife I put in on the floor they lay down myself. I can smell the dog’s breath I just thing about what its last meal might have been. Then a small girl runs forward “puppy” I instinctively run forward and jump on the dog ready to tackle the beast. The dog have vanished I am on a train “do you know who this is?” he begs, I don’t want him to hurt me “no” I say when I actually recognise him. “you could save me” he is pleading “well I don’t know him” the lights reappear and I’m awake. The amity woman looks scared “what?” she looks like she has seen a ghost “you’re divergent, don’t tell anyone divergence is dangerous you will find yourself dead if they find out, you have three aptitudes abnegation, dauntless, erudite. I suggest you go home and choose wisely.”
After dinner I head to the chasm this is where me and dad think- I can’t leave them they are my family, no I won’t leave them but faction before blood right, I guess I can’t be controlled I’m brave I’m dauntless.
I wake up to find mum cooking my breakfast. “Hey darling, you certain what you want to pick?” I nod. Mum and dad exchange worried glances. I smile because I know I’m staying. “Madeleine just be careful in whatever faction you pick, we love you no matter what” aw he is so sweet “so who is taking the dauntless borns and initiates this year?” “Tris and I are born taking dauntless borns and Uriah and Zeke the initiates."
