I wake up in chains. I hear dad wince out quietly in pain. I have trained myself to hear even the quietest of sounds. I snap my head round and see Marcus with a belt laughing. "what do they want to know?" I demand. "you should have learned by now to keep you and your family's mouths shut Tobias." Worry strikes my dads eyes for a fraction of a second. crap. I see Marcus has a knife. HOW DIDN'T I SEE THAT BEFORE I OPENED MY MOUTH? His grip on the belt tightens and it quickly connects with Dads eye. He shows no change in emotion he just looks angry. Marcus grabs the knife and walks over to me. Dads eyes flare with worry. And I think he wants to know who are divergents. Marcus hold the knife tightly to my throat. If he doesn't kill me cancer soon will. I know he won't kill me if dad doesn't answer. I shake My head slowly at dad so Marcus won't notice. Instead I see Marcus go into a cabinet behind Dad. He pulls out a needle and I signalize I will be okay to dad. The needle jabs into my back. Nothing happens. I feel a burning sensation in my lungs. Marcus looks confused as I show no emotion. Like dad I have mastered this art. "I don't understand, you should be dead." oh I remember learning about these injections in science, they will kill. I smile he has unwillingly just saved me. Marcus leaves the room shaking his head in confusion.
"Why are you smiling Mads?" dad is just as confused as Marcus. "Sam, The boy who transferred from dauntless to abnegation changed the serum to a reverse, that was a cure not a poison. Max the dauntless leader dared him to as a bet and he said he did it. Of course no one believes him. he wasn't a known candor but... I guess he was telling the truth." Dad laughs then abruptly stops. I hear it too. Footsteps. I hear five gunshots and five collapses. I see Dad has stolen Marcus' Knife and has cut off his chains. He runs over to me and takes a hair pin out of my hair, He picks the lock of my chains. click. They are open. He silently leads me to the Conner of the room. He stands in front like a human shield. Someone kicks at the door once, then twice, then once more. Bang.
