I walk with Rory to the Independence Inn after school. It was, yet again, another boring day at Stars Hollow High. Rory had her nose in her books since we left the school, but I convinced her to put her books away when we started to get close to the Inn.
"Do you think we're going to get to go to Chilton?" I ask Rory. We sent both of our letters to the headmaster about a month ago, before school started. But now we're two weeks into school and we still haven't heard anything from the headmaster.
"I hope so. It's how we're going to get into a good college." she tells me. "Lets hurry, maybe Mom got the letter today." she urges me to walk faster.
We step into the Inn but don't see Mom at the front desk.
"Mom?" I call out.
Rory puts her arms on the desk. "Michel? Do you happen to know where Mom is?"
He doesn't look up but still answers. "In the kitchen, with Sookie. Probably cleaning up some big mess that Sookie caused." he informs us.
I roll my eyes. "Thanks." We go to the kitchen doors and I already hear Mom and Sookie giggling.
As soon as we push the door open, they straighten up and try not to smile.
"Uh, Mom?" I say.
"Yeah?" she grins.
Rory and I walk in but stay in front of the door. "You seem happy. What's going on?" Rory asks them.
Mom exchanges a glance with Sookie before answering Rory. "We are." she admits.
"Are you going to tell us?" I tug my sleeves down so they cover my hands.
Mom turns and picks up two gift bags. She hands one to me and the other to Rory. "Here."
"What's this?" I peek in the bag.
Mom crosses her arms and bounces on her feet excitedly. "My god, you ask a lot of questions, young one."
Rory and I both pull out a plaid skirt. We look at each other then look at Mom, who couldn't contain her excitement no matter how hard she tried. This must be huge.
Rory looks at me with her baby blue eyes. "We're going to be in a Britney Spears video?" she says sarcastically.
I chuckle. "Good one."
Sookie apparently can't hold it in any longer so she blurts it out. "You're going to Chilton!!" she immediately grimaces. "Sorry."
"Mom?!" I exclaim.
Rory stares at Mom hopefully, but intensely. "Did we..?"
Mom sighs happily. "You did it. Both of you. You got in." she tells us.
I nearly faint. "Are you sure? We got in?"
She nods. "Definitely. You start on Monday."
"Really?!" Rory jumps.
"Yes!" Mom smiles serenely.
"I don't believe this." I mutter. "I'm going to Chilton!"
Mom pulls us both in for a huge hug. "Oh! I'm so proud of my smart girls!" she whisper-yells.
When we finally pull away, me and Rory hold hands and jump up and down. "WE'RE GOING TO CHILTON!!" we shriek.
"I'll make cookies." Sookie says. I feel bad for forgetting about Sookie, she's a part of this too. So, I give her a hug.
