Rory and I get on the bus, talking about her birthday. Which is only two days away.
"I can't believe I'm gonna be 16 in two days." Rory exclaims. "I'm old."
"Well then, that makes me young, thanks." I laugh.
She rolls her eyes, and finds a single seat in the back. "Why do you take pleasure in my sadness?" she asks rhetorically.
"I dunno." I smile and sit in front of her. "Y'know, technically, we could pass for twins?"
"Nuh-uh." she disagrees. "Not with your red hair."
"Fraternal twins, hello!" I say. "We're both still fifteen and we are sisters."
"I'll pass."
"Ugh. Fine." I am looking out the window as the bus starts to pull away from the curb, when suddenly a guy runs to the bus doors. The bus driver lets him on, then continues to drive.
When the guy starts walking down the bus, I notice, it's Asher. Again!
He walks over to a seat on the left side of mine and Rory's. He smirks at me and I blush, pushing a stray piece of hair to the side. He mouths 'Get off with me?' I don't answer, so he stands up and goes to the front of the bus.
"Rory," I say. "I'm gonna get off here."
"Why?" she asks me.
"Why not?" I return. She shrugs, so I get up and head to the back doors. When the bus driver pulls over, I get off.
Then the bus drives away, leaving me and Asher standing in a bunch of gas. He smiles and walks towards me. I pull my sleeves down so it covers my hands.
"Hey," he says, slyly.
I feel my cheeks heat up, I try to ignore it. "Hi." I reply. "So, I couldn't help but notice that we happen to be in the same class. Never mind the same school." I walk to him.
"Yeah." he chuckles. "Were you the girl who beat me in the class quiz?"
I nod. "Yeah. I told you I wasn't stupid."
He grins. "I know." He holds eye contact, until I forcefully look away.
"Do you know how to get to school from here?" I ask, walking past him.
"Of course I do." he replies, catching up to me. "I just wanted to walk."
"Why?"
"So, I wouldn't have to try to have a conversation with you on the bus." he tells me.
I blush. "Oh."
"I see you made a friend already." he comments.
"Breanna? Yeah, she's great. I'm glad I stole her spot on the first day." I laugh. "Wait, I thought you just moved. To Stars-Hollow."
He smiles. "Yeah, I did. But, that was before school started. I had already been accepted to Chilton before I moved. That's part of the reason why I moved."
"Oh. So you knew everyone already?"
"Yep. Except you." he says meaningfully, looking into my eyes. I'm tempted to look away again, but something in his eyes tells me not to. So I keep eye contact. We're slowly walking side by side, almost to the next bus stop. Still, maintaining eye contact.
Slowly I notice his eyes flicker down my face, then search all over my face for an expression; for permission. I look at his lips then back to his eyes, noticing a stray piece of my hair fall in front of my face. I'm about to reach up and brush it back, but Asher gets there first. He gently pushes the hair behind my ear, then he rests his hand on my neck.
My feet stop and so do his. His eyes lock onto mine, and he leans forward a bit. I swallow, terrified and ecstatic at the same time. I lean closer to him and he pulls my head closer. Finally, I close my eyes and feel his lips on mine. It's gentle and mind-blowing. I don't ever want to leave this moment. He wraps an arm around my waist and pulls my body closer. This moment seems like it's never going to stop.
But, eventually, it does. He pulls away and I step back. I just stare at the ground because I can't afford to look at him right now. Although I can feel his eyes on me. He turns away, with his back to me, and says, "I'm sorry,"
I manage to look at him. "What do you mean?"
"We just became friends and you're new at school--"
I interrupt. "Not that new. I started school over two weeks ago. I'm not behind and...we were friends. I-I mean, I like you but..we can still be friends right?" I say.
He shakes his head. "I know, we can. But, I don't wanna screw things up."
I walk up behind him. "We won't. This is..us. Nothing will go wrong. I mean, it could. But we're here now, not at the end. So let's just focus on us right now, not the future."
He turns back to me, with a smile on his face. "That's what I wanted to hear."
I smile back. He stares into my eyes, then before he can do anything, I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him. Then, we walk down the road, hand in hand.
