"Yes..?" Mom says hesitantly.
I gulp a big breath of air. "Well..I'm thinking of inviting Asher over in a few days. I wanted to know if it's okay with you."
She nods with relief. "Oh okay good. I thought it was something else." she sighs. "Good. Good."
I look at her with curiosity. "What did you think?"
She glances at me but looks away. "Nothing, nothing.."
"Mom.."
"I thought you two were together or something. But that's not gonna happen." she tells me. I stare at the palms of my hands, watching them shake.
"Heh. Yeah.." I say, noticing her smile. "Are you laughing?"
"No.." she tries to say seriously. "Okay, well, yeah."
I roll my eyes and stand.
"Where are you goin'?" she says in between laughs.
I ignore her and open the door.
"What's wrong? You like him??" she jokes, but I don't find it funny.
"Whatever Mom." I groan, slamming the door behind me. I take off my sneakers and drop them, then I go into the kitchen to get something to calm me down; food.
After I leave my backpack at the table, I grab the box of pop-tats from the cupboard and take two out to put in the toaster. I go to the fridge to get some juice, I so do not feel like coffee right now.
Just as I finish pouring myself orange juice, the pop-tarts pop and I hear the front door open seconds after. I mentally groan, but try to ignore it; her. So I put my pop-tarts on a plate and sit at the table to eat, back faced to the entrance.
I pull out my homework and start to write. Soon enough, Mom sits in front of me with a serious expression on her face, but I don't look up.
"Honey..?" she tries, reaching for my right hand, with the pencil. I pull away and lean a bit to the left. "What's bothering you?"
"Nothing.." I grumble.
"Sweetie, I know something's wrong."
"No you don't.." I mumble.
"Callie.."
I don't reply.
"Callie."
I push my chair back and reach for my bag. "I'm gonna go somewhere else." I pick up my leftover pop-tart, my notebook and pencil.
"Callie!" she calls.
I walk past her and head for the back door. I'm still in my socks so I creep around the house and wait for Mom to go upstairs before I sneak in to get my shoes. I slowly walk around Stars-Hollow, trying to figure out where I should go. Then it hits me. I know two people who are perfectly capable of letting me stay with them for a while. Grandma and Grandpa.
* * *
I get out of the cab and walk to the front door of the Gilmore mansion. I gulp the chilly air, which turns my throat cold. Then I ring the door bell and wait for a maid to come to the door.
The door opens, but it isn't a maid who opened the door. It's Grandpa!
"Grandpa!" I exclaim. "What are you doing, answering the door? I thought the maids were supposed to do that."
He stares at me confused. "Callie..what are you doing here? So late in the afternoon. Shouldn't you be at home?"
I sigh. "I know. I just wanted to see you and Grandma. That's all.." I fib. It technically isn't a lie, I really do want to see them. "May I come in?"
He pushes the door, stepping aside to allow me come in. "Your grandmother's at the dining table."
I take off my hoodie, revealing a white t-shirt with the name 'Macy Gray' on it.
"You like Macy Gray?" he asks me, taking my hoodie and hanging it on the coat rack.
I nod. "Mhm. She's amazing! Her last concert was incredible! I couldn't go though, it was all the way in Philadelphia.."
He starts to guide me to the dining room. "That's a shame. Philly isn't that far away."
I glance at him. "No?"
"No." he shakes his head, causing his hair to flop from side to side. "It's only a couple of hours by car. I'm sure if you had asked your mother about it, she would have--"
I cut him off before he could finish that sentence. "No. No, she wouldn't have let me." I look down at my walking shoes. "She would've let Rory though.." I mumble, thinking he wouldn't have heard it.
Apparently he does because next he says, "Well, she may allow Rory to go, but maybe that's because she's a little bit more mature. Perhaps, if you did some more adult-like things, she would--"
"Take me more seriously.." I finish for him, nodding. "Yeah..maybe.." I say with doubt.
He wraps an arm around my shoulder. "Don't worry, Callie. If she won't take you or allow you..me and your grandmother will."
This makes me listen more intently. "What? Grandpa.."
He holds up a hand, preventing me from saying anything more. "I can tell you're an ambitious young lady. You probably have a journal filled with places all over the world that you want to go to."
I blush, how'd he know?
"I have no problem helping you reach your goals. I'm sure your grandmother wouldn't mind either."
"Really?!"
"Not at all."
"But..what about Mom? Will I be able to really go??" I question.
"I don't see why not.."
"Really? Oh thank you, Grandpa!" I squeal, hugging him tightly. Wow, he is so tall.
"Anything for you, Callie." he whispers. "You're a good girl, you deserve to do all you want."
I sigh happily. I've finally found happiness within this week. Heck, within this month! Mom was so wrong to keep me from them. They treat me the way I should be treated, fairly. I could've had this my whole life! But no. I was kept from them, my own grandparents!
Mom was wrong. Heh. So wrong..
