Mom, Rory and I walk to the magazine corner. There are yellow daisies everywhere, maybe more than a thousand at this point. Mom still hasn't responded to the proposal yet, although the whole town knows she'll say yes; even though they're all pretty disappointed that Luke and Mom won't be together.
Now, Miss Patty walks over to Mom. "You said yes!!" She exclaims, startling Mom who is reading a wedding magazine. She isn't helping her case by looking through that stuff.
"No, no. I haven't said yes yet." Mom responds, rubbing her ear.
"Yet . ." Rory says with a smirk.
Mom does her signature eye roll. "What are you going to say to him?" Patty asks her.
"Who?"
"Luke."
Mom forces a smile, which is obvious to me but not to Patty and Rory. "I'll tell him." She clearly isn't looking forward to the confrontation either.
Patty gasps just as Babette approaches. "What'd I miss?!" Patty motions to Mom and Babette squeals. "You said yes!!"
"Oh my god . ." Mom groans with annoyance.
"I'm gonna head over to Luke's, get a table and some coffee. I'll meet you guys there once you've escaped from those two."
"I'll come with," Rory says, but Mom grips her arm before she can move.
"No!" Mom shrieks, gripping on tighter. "Don't leave me alone with them."
Rory gives her a puzzled look then turns to me with an exasperated expression. "We'll meet you there."
"Whatever." I hurry towards the diner, my hands in my jean pockets and my head down.
"Hey, Callie." Luke greets me when I walk in.
"Oh. Hi, Luke." I reply, falling into a nearby seat.
"What's wrong?"
"Huh?"
He sets down the coffee pot he seems to always be holding, after first pouring me a cup of course. "You look like something's bothering you."
I sigh. "It's just . . . I don't know. Is everything an appropriate answer?"
He pulls out the chair beside me. "I'd say so, it's an excuse I use often. What falls under that category?"
"Mom, Rory, Asher, Breanna . . . life." I list them off on my fingers then lay my head on the table.
"What's going on with your Mom?" He asks, clearing his throat after. Of course, he asked about her first.
"It's nothing. Well . . . She'll tell you about it herself. In a couple of minutes."
"She's coming here?"
"Yeah, with Rory," I tell him. "Why?"
"It's just that she's going to hear about what happened here last week."
I shake my head, which is still pressed against the cold surface of the table. "What happened last week?"
"With you and Asher."
"Oh, right." Crap. I totally forgot to tell them about that, not like I was dying to talk about it. I'd much rather forget about it altogether.
"I assume you haven't told them?"
I shake my head again. "What makes you say that?"
