"Hey, where did Grandma run off to?" Rory asks.

"I dunno." Mom replies. "I'll go--"

"No." I say, a bit loudly. I clear my throat. "I'll go see what she's doing."

"She's most likely in the basement." Grandpa informs me.

  "The basement?" I ask, confused.

Grandpa nods. "Yes. Pulling out every present we've ever gotten from your great-grandmother."

  "But, why--"

"Just assume Grandma is me and Gran is Grandma." Mom states, as Grandpa rolls his eyes smiling.

  "Gran?"

  "Great-Grandma." Mom says.

I nod slowly. "Got it. I'll be right back."

"Take pictures!" Mom calls as I walk away.

  "What?"

"Go, Callie. Or else you'll never get out." Rory says.

I grin and hurry to the basement, where loud objects are falling. "Grandma!" I call as I step downstairs.

  "Horrible....Woman....Hate...." Grandma mumbles.

I finally spot her taking out some things. "Grandma, what are you doing down here?"

"I have to unpack some things." she says strained. "Did your mother send you?"

I shake my head. "No, I wanted to see how you were. What you were doing." I explain. "What are you doing?"

  "I'm unpacking." she tells me.

"I didn't realize you just moved in. When's the house warming party?" I joke, grinning.

She turns to look at me with a serious but funny face. "You have your mother's wit."

"I wonder where she got it from." I tease. She smiles in return. "I'm sorry, Grandma. I didn't come here to tease you."

  She sighs heavily.

"Why and what are you unpacking?"

  "Your great-grandmother's things."

  "Things?"

"Presents she gave Richard and I for Christmas every year since she moved."

"Oh." I say. "But, what's wrong with them?"

"What isn't?!" she shrieks. I step back, a bit surprised. "Sorry. I'm just stressed out."

  "..You don't like..Gran?"

"I...she's Richard's mother and she has done a lot for us but--"

  "You don't like her?"

She sighs and smiles. "She just..she treats me as if I'm working for her. Like I'm nothing at all to her but a burden."

  "I know."

"Callie, I appreciate your concern but you don't have to pretend to understand. I'm fine and I don't need anyone's pity." she tells me.
