Poem 6 - Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, I was with you

Wishing upon stars as children do.

Once upon a time, we dreamt and prayed,

Now I wonder, how memories fade!

Once upon a time, I was a child.

The world was pretty, the world was mild.

But never again will it be like that,

Even this sky's not what we stared at.

Once upon a time, I was so young,

Now I remember which songs we'd sung

Once upon a time, you sang with me,

Now I sing alone, unhappily.

Once upon a time, we wrote stories

Of stormy seas and fair ladies,

But now I watch as images change:

I bear witness to the wars that rage.

Once upon a time, the world's in peace.

I never thought that it would all cease.

Now I watch as people make battle.

I listen; children scream, the bombs rattle.

Once upon a time, everything's fair;

Now I woke up and I saw despair.

Once upon a time, the sky was blue

But now it is stained a crimson hue.

Then there comes the time that we both fall,

When our strengths fail; when we've given all.

Then, nothing will matter; not words, not rhyme...

We lived, we'll die, once upon a time.
