To Mother, With Love
I shout, you pout.
You love, I doubt.
You yell, I'm out.
But without you, I'm naught.
You were what my heart sought.
I look in the glass
And I see a lass
That looks like the girl
That her mother was.
That itself is proof
Of what I owe you.
Nothing I could do
Can pay back that debt,
Even if it's blood that I wept.
From rocking my cradle,
You're now handling the ladle.
You taught me my letters,
And how to speak to my betters.
You work for me
And my brothers
And the only fee
Is respect from me
And love for others.
So If I can only be
Half as good
As you turned out to be,
My childhood
Will be worth it.
And the love you've shown me;
I will make you see
The answer I'll give that
For all eternity.
