Poem 10 - A Thousand Paper Cranes

What does it take to grant a wish?

A thousand paper cranes.

What must I do for my own wish?

To fold my thousand cranes.

I started work immediately

To make my prayers heard.

But which one matters most to me?

That... was left unanswered

Should I wish for fame and fortune

To ease my poverty?

Should I wish for a bounteous boon;

Does it matter truly?

Most blessedly, there came to me

One pleasant companion.

He sat and folded cranes with me;

Joyful occupation.

He helped me fold my paper cranes

For my wish to come true.

He told me that "The number wanes,

Tell what wishes have you."

I did not know at that moment

And I told him as much.

"You should wish for things that are meant."

He said that, with a touch.

That I recall while I behold

The thousandth paper crane.

So then I wished that I may hold

Him, who helped me..... again.
