The next morning, I woke up early and took a shower. I then made myself some toast and put Nutella on it. I wore the same outfit as yesterday—I'm too lazy to do laundry on my vacation. It was a tank top with a floral and lacy pattern and some jean shorts.
I then made my way out the door and to the dog shelter Sophia told me about.
As I walked in, everything was gray. Even the uniforms they wore were gray. I stepped up to the counter and smiled at the man.
"Hello, I'm here for a pet."
"Well, congratulations. That's the only thing we sell here," he said sarcastically. He then got up and walked over to the door beside his desk. "Let's go check out the pups, shall we?" He motioned for me to go first. Geez, this guy. What an ass.
"Um, I don't want a puppy. I just want an adult," I said, correcting him.
Older dogs are better. I don't have to potty train them, and they're low maintenance most of the time.
"Well, that's a first in a while," he said, shocked.
He walked over to the other side of his desk and opened the door for me to go in first. I stepped in and was instantly barked at by the many dogs in cages. There were so many types and sizes. I went up to each and every cage. The small ones were so cute, while the larger ones were adorable.
I picked my top three out of all of them. My number one was a Shih Tzu with floppy ears and a big, happy wagging tail. Then number two was this German Shepherd that melted my heart when I first saw his chocolate eyes. And number three was this white terrier that had so much energy she looked as if she could run a mile.
I was about to make my pick when I heard a loud bark that made all the other dogs stop. It came from the farthest cage on the right.
The man called for me once I got to the cage. "Um, ma'am, I wouldn't go near that one. He's a bit feisty and doesn't like people much," he said to me.
I looked at him and then back to the small brown dog-wolf sitting at the edge of the cage, almost shoving his nose through the wire to smell me. I squatted down to get on his level and held out my hand.
"He doesn't look like he could hurt anyone," I said as I let him sniff and lick my hand.
The man just stood there, amazed. "Oh, um, uh..." At that point, he went to pet the dog-wolf when he growled and barked at him, shocking me back onto my butt.
The dog-wolf whimpered and laid down, staring at me. I got back up, brushing off the dirt from my shorts. I looked up at the man, still shocked.
"Um, yeah, he does that mostly. But he has been here for about a month now and has shown no sign of change, so we'll just put him down tomorrow," he said, which broke my heart.
I looked back at the dog-wolf and saw his eyes were trained on the man. He then got up and put his nose through the wires again to smell me.
"That's horrible. How could you do that?"
He shrugged. "There's too much overpopulation, and we can't put any other dogs with him because he's so mean. And no one will adopt him either, so we have to put him down." He looked at the dog-wolf and then back at me. "But he seems to like you."
"I'll take him," I said.
"You'll what?" he questioned.
"I said I'll adopt him."
"Um, you sure? We have plenty of others." He pointed to the Shih Tzu I was eyeing earlier.
I heard the dog-wolf whine a little. I stood up, confident in my decision. "Nope, I'll take this one right here," I said, pointing at the cage.
The man shrugged and gestured for me to follow him. When I did, I could hear the dog-wolf whining because I left. I looked back, smiled, and waved at him as I followed the man to the front.
"Alrighty, let's fill out these papers," he said while handing me a two-page packet. "Fill those out while I figure out how much it will cost."
I filled out the packet until I got to the last box of information:
Name:
Age:
Type:
Pin #:
What am I going to name him? And not even the pet shop knows this information, so why ask me? Oh well, I'll just guess.
Name: Wolf
Age: 4
Type: Dog-wolf
Pin #:
I left the Pin # blank because I didn't know what his pin was. I got up and walked over to the man at the desk and handed him the paper. He took it from my hands.
"That will be $50," he said.
$50? Geez, that's great.
I opened my purse and handed him my card. He slid the card and then handed it back to me. I shoved it in my wallet and took the receipt from him, stuffing it into my huge purse.
"Now can I get my dog?" I asked, getting impatient.
The man stood up in a huff and walked past me. "Wait here," he told me, proceeding through the door.
I didn't hear anything for a while except lots of barking when suddenly I heard a loud "$hit!" from the hall.
I quickly ran over to the door and opened it to see Wolf running to me, the man hot on his tail. Wolf jumped into my arms and started smelling and licking me all over. I started giggling and laughing.
"S-stop, p-please!"
After a moment, Wolf got off and just started walking to the door, waiting for me to leave with him.
I looked back at the man, and he handed me a collar and a leash. "Thanks," I told him.
"No problem. I'm just happy that mutt is finally leaving," he said, nodding toward Wolf.
But Wolf just growled at him.
"It seems he is glad to be leaving too," I laughed.
I walked over to Wolf and put the collar around him. "Hey, big guy. Your new name is Wolf, and mine is Ashly," I said while clasping on the leash.
Wolf barked and started spinning around me, showing he was ready to leave.
"Well, bye then," I waved to the man before opening the door and having Wolf pull me all the way out of the place.
Once we got to the shopping area, I stopped at a pet shop. As I stepped in with Wolf, he wasn't so happy anymore about being in the pet shop...
