I—I'm a witch?!...
I'm a witch...
No matter how many times I said it, it still didn't make sense to me. Sophia looked over at me, shocked. I was speechless. I tried to speak, but nothing came out. I looked like a fish out of water, gasping for air. Christine shook my shoulder.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
I shook myself, finally able to respond. "Yeah... I'm fine."
Javiare spoke up, "Hey, you were here to ask her a specific question, right?"
Then I remembered Roman. I looked up at Christine. "We can talk more about me later, but can you please take a look at Roman? He is my mate and the Alpha here. Sadly, he's injured, and I want him to heal as fast as possible," I told her.
She looked down slightly at what I said, then smiled and nodded. "Of course. Anything for the Alpha and Luna," she said.
Christine closed the large book. "Does anybody else want a reading before we go to Alpha Roman?" she asked, looking at Javiare and me.
We looked at each other, then back at her. "Um... no thank you, I'm good right now," he said, and I nodded in agreement.
Christine shrugged and grabbed the cards. She walked back to her carriage. "Let me grab some supplies. How is he hurt?" she called from inside.
"He has a large cut across his back and lost a lot of blood during a fight," I explained.
We heard jars and other things rattling together before Christine emerged from the carriage with a dark brown bag slung across her shoulder. "Ready—oh," she started, leaning up and grabbing one of the dream catchers off the roof and holding it close. "Now I'm ready," she confirmed.
Christine turned around, shutting and locking the door. "He's in the hospital, so we'll have to walk there," I said.
Christine nodded and followed us. As we passed through the street, people gave her strange looks, some even scowling. We flanked her—me on her left, Sophia on her right—while Javiare led the way. Christine had seemed outgoing when we first met her, but now she kept to herself. The people didn't seem to like her either.
We made our way through the crowd and to the hospital. I walked over to the desk to see Meril sitting there, but she smiled at me. "Oh, hello! Someone already visited today," she said.
"Okay," I said. "Let's go inside—he's waiting." I started down the hallway.
We stopped in front of his door and waited for everyone to catch up. I opened the door to see Roman still lying there, the unmarked bottle and cup empty. I guessed Jared must have given him the rest. I quickly sat down next to him.
"He's been like this for a few days now," I told Christine.
She walked in and set her bag down next to the empty bottle. "What's this?" she asked, picking it up.
"Oh, Jared found some healing something-or-other to fix him," I said.
Christine examined the bottle carefully, turning it in her hands, leaning in to smell it. Her eyes went wide, and she quickly set it down before rummaging through her bag.
"That wasn't a healing potion," she said.
Javiare leaned over. "Then what was it?" I asked, while Sophia sat next to me, feeling Roman's forehead.
"He feels warm," Sophia said.
I placed my hand gently on his forehead, feeling the burning heat on my skin. I leaned back, shocked. "What was that then?!" I asked, my voice a little louder.
Christine let go of her bag and huffed. "It was a poison—not just any poison... werewolf poison," she said, then began placing more bottles on the table, each clearly labeled.
I read some as she set them down: sage, rosemary, cat's eye powder, and lean root.
"I don't have everything I need. I need to go back to my carriage," she said.
Javiare stepped forward. "I'll take you back," he said.
Swiftly, Christine grabbed Javiare's arm and sprinted out of the room with him. Slowly, my heart rate started to rise. I felt scared and worried. What if he dies? Would I be able to live on? Could I lead this pack where it needed to go? My thoughts spiraled uncontrollably.
Sophia rubbed my back and held my other hand—the one not already holding Roman's. "Shhhh. Christine knows what she's doing. She'll be back in just a moment and fix him. Once she does, we'll all laugh about this someday," she said, trying to calm me.
Nothing worked. My thoughts kept returning to reality. Sophia got up, retrieved a paper towel, and placed it in my hand.
"Put this on him—it will help cool him," she said.
I quickly dabbed and patted him, trying to cool him down. "I'm sorry," I whispered, tears streaming down my face. "I'm so sorry," I repeated over and over, waiting for Javiare and Christine to return...
