Before he left, he spat into the cell and said, "I tried you." I just stuck my tongue out at him until he walked away.

There was no way I could break out on my own. I curled up in a ball and grabbed a rock, tracing circles on the floor. I imagined what I'd do if I got out—hit up a huge buffet and stuff myself. I hadn't eaten since before I was kidnapped. Probably taken after lunch... I hadn't even woken up with my alarm. It all depended on how long I'd been out. I nodded to myself and fell asleep on my knees in that curled-up ball.

Jasper

"Okay, and when are we leaving to go save her?" Sophia asked, all serious.

"I'm going to save her, not you. You're staying here." I looked at my brother. "We can't waste any more time. I need Cole, Adam, and Jack for this mission," I said, standing and showing I meant business.

"Only if I come too," he said, smiling. "I need to get out of here. I've been cooped up in this room too long—I want to go smash someone's face in." He walked around the desk.

His eyes went grey for a moment, which meant he was mind-linking someone.
"What is with him?" Sophia whispered, pointing to my brother.

"He's mind-linking someone—basically talking to people in his head," I said, smiling at her. She laughed. God, did I love that laugh. I wished I could make her laugh and smile forever.

Then my brother turned to Sophia, holding out his hand.
"My name is Alpha Roman, by the way. Nice to meet you. I just contacted my beta, Jared, to watch you while we rescue your friend. He should be here in a few minutes, but for now, my mother can show you to a room and keep an eye on you." He nodded toward Mom, who smiled at Sophia.

My brother walked off, with me following.
"I'm going back to her apartment to get something to track her with, okay?" I asked.

"Good thinking. I'll go get the others and meet you there," he said. With that, we separated—the fight long forgotten.

I went out the back, got undressed, and tied all my clothes into a small bundle. I shifted, picked up the ball of clothes, and sprinted to her apartment.

Sophia

So, this is Wolf's mother... she seems nice.
"So, what's a beta?" I asked.

She giggled. "So you're human. A beta is second in command. When the alpha leaves, the beta takes over until he returns."

"And what if the alpha never comes back?" I asked. She stopped smiling. I held up my hands. "Not that he wouldn't—I'm just trying to understand this place."

She looked down at her lap. "Well, the person who kills the alpha gets the position, or if it's unknown, the heirs take over." She looked back at me.

"And what if there are no heirs?" I asked.

Just as she was about to reply, the door opened. A different man stepped in.
"Well, well," he said, stopping next to me. "What do we have here? Is this the beautiful maiden I am here to protect?" He grinned.

I nodded. "And you must be the alleged beta," I said, playing his game.

"Oh yes, young maiden," he bowed, then looked up and winked.

I giggled. So did Wolf's mother.
"Let's go, you fools," she said, rolling her eyes as she led us to the door.

I followed, still a little giggly. I looked at Wolf's mother.
"You never told me your name?" I asked.

"My name is Merida, honey," she said. "And your room is right here." She stopped in front of a door.

I stared at the door for a moment, then back at Merida. Suddenly, Jasper piped up behind me.
"Well, are you just going to stare at the door or go inside?" he laughed.

I stepped in. I expected a closet, but the room had a king-size bed, double closets, and a balcony. I walked over to the bathroom—double sinks, shower, and a Jacuzzi tub with jets. "Damn," I muttered under my breath.

I turned back to see Jared walking in with Merida.
"I'll be back soon—I have some beta business to take care of. I'll leave you two ladies and some guards here with you," he said. His eyes glazed over for a moment, then returned to normal. "They'll be posted outside your bedroom. If you want to go anywhere, just ask them—or Miss Merida here," he said, gesturing to Wolf's mom.

"Okay, thanks," I said, walking toward them.

"I must bid you adieu, madam," Jared said, bowing and winking.

"Good morrow, sir," I said, playing along.

We giggled, and Merida pushed Jared out the door. "If you need anything, just ask one of the guards to mind-link me," she said, pointing to his head and eyes.

"Okay," I said as Merida shut the door.

"I swear that man thinks like a four-year-old," she muttered, shaking her head. Then she clapped her hands. "Now, let's get you some food. You must be hungry, right?" She looped my arm in hers.

Which reminded me—I was a little hungry. "Yeah, okay," I said.

She led me to one of the closets and opened it.
"Well, if you're going to eat, at least you need something clean to wear," she said, grabbing a sundress. "Here, change into this." She handed it to me and pushed me into the walk-in closet.

She shut the door. I quickly threw off my old clothes and slipped into the dress. It fit surprisingly well. I walked out, spinning around for Merida.
"How's this?" I asked.

She clapped her hands. "Perfect! Let's go. They should be serving dinner soon." She hooked her arm with mine and led me out of the room, where two large men awaited.
"The dining room, please, boys," she said, guiding them down the hallway.
