Sophia
I wanted to look around before bothering the boy. I checked the dressers and looked at all the photos he had. Most were with the same people, but one person appeared in every single one. It was a guy—he looked almost exactly like Wolf, just taller and with a different hairstyle.
I didn't want to open any drawers or go into his closet, but I did check the bathroom. And, wow—it's huge. Full bath and separate shower, double sinks... fresh towels and all the amenities. Damn, he's got it made. I was done; this room was too much.
I knocked on the door, and the boy opened it, an extremely worried look on his face. I quickly said, "Everything's fine. I'm not dying." That seemed to calm him down a lot.
"So what is it then?" he asked, peering into the room.
"Well... I was thinking. This Alpha guy—shouldn't I meet him? Or is he too above it and doesn't care about little old me wandering into the... um... uh... what is this place called again?" I asked, furrowing my eyes at him.
He just laughed. "It's called the Pack House," he said.
"Yeah, the Pack House. So if he doesn't know I'm here, doesn't that make me a trespasser?" I leaned in closer. "So the only solution is to meet this famous alpha, right?" I nudged him gently out of the door.
He shrugged. "I don't know. He's probably busy with—"
"Oh, don't worry. I'll just say it's my idea. Okay? So which way is it?" I said, stepping out, ready to explore this unknown territory.
"Uh, this way," he pointed to the right, and I started walking.
"But I don't think this is a good idea," he called, catching up.
"But I do, so that's okay," I said.
We returned to the entrance room, where multiple hallways spread out. "So now where?" I asked, looking at him.
He pointed left. I immediately started walking faster, excited. I was about to meet the head honcho. What does he look like? Cold-hearted, covered in tattoos and scars? Or maybe just a wimp everyone follows out of politeness. Well... we'd see, wouldn't we?
The boy caught up and pointed to a large door in the middle of the hall.
"I'm going to take you back. He's busy right now," he said, gently grabbing my arm.
Then I heard a loud booming voice:
"Is this a joke? Do you enjoy tormenting me—much less your own mother?"
It was a man yelling. He's probably the alpha, because suddenly the boy's grip loosened and he froze, staring at the door in fear.
I needed to do something. I leaned over and knocked lightly. The boy looked at me in horror.
"Whyyyy?!?!?!" he whispered-shouted.
The door flew open, and I saw the man from the photos with Wolf.
"What?" he demanded, his eyes black.
Suddenly, Wolf appeared in front of me, ready to protect me.
"Mine," he said.
The alpha looked at Wolf, then back at me. His eyes slowly turned brown. Once he calmed down, I stepped in front of Jasper, holding out my hand.
"Oh, uh, hi. You must be the alpha I've heard so much about. My name is Sophia, and I have a lot of questions for you."
I shook his hand, then turned back to Wolf.
"And even more for you, Wolf," I said.
Wolf just looked down at me with adoration—and fear. I glanced at the alpha, who was clearly confused.
"What? Is she really—?" he asked Wolf.
"Yeah, she is," Wolf said.
"Hey! I'm standing right here," I said, hands on my hips.
"Does she know about it?" the alpha asked, still ignoring me.
Wolf shook his head.
"No, she doesn't. I was going to tell her after I talked to you... about something, or someone."
"By 'someone,' you mean Ashley? Because I'd like to be here for this conversation," I said, tiptoeing slightly to block them, staring straight into the alpha's eyes.
"And would you please not ignore me any longer?"
He moved aside, gesturing me in. I glanced back at the boy, whose face was astonished. I waved and smiled.
"Told ya," I muttered while walking in.
I sat on a chair and greeted the other woman in the room with a smile; she nodded quietly. The alpha man walked behind his desk and sat down, crossing his arms and leaning back.
"Well, I'd like to hear these questions you have for my brother," he said, gesturing to Wolf, who shut the door and stood next to me.
"What were you two talking about that I don't know?" the alpha asked.
Wolf looked serious.
"You're my mate."
"My what? What's a mate?" I asked.
"It's short for soulmate. You two were meant to be together. The perfect couple," the alpha explained.
I have a soulmate—and he's right here. I glanced at the woman, who nodded again. "I... I... oh," I stammered, speechless.
Wolf knelt next to me.
"It's okay. Calm down." He put his hand on mine, and sparks shot through me at his touch.
I shook it off, looked down in my lap, and took a deep breath. Then I looked back at Wolf.
"Okay, let's get to the point. Where's my friend Ashley?" I said flatly.
The color drained from Wolf's face.
"She was kidnapped by some rogues. I came here to get my brother's help to save her," he explained, gesturing to the alpha.
"So how are you going to find her?" I asked, feeling smart for getting straight to the point. They were probably humor me, but it felt good to be in control.
"By her scent, of course. We'll get something that smells like her, send out our trackers, and bring her back."
"Okay. And when are we leaving to go save her?" I asked, dead serious. There's no way I'm not saving my best friend.
