Jasper
I got to the edge of the forest and looked out over Wolf Farm, checking for any humans. I was on high alert—last time this happened, I had been captured in that dreaded mutt prison. I didn't notice anyone, so I shifted into a bush and put on the clothes I'd brought in a ball with me.
I quickly made my way across the street to Ashley's apartment and tried the door. It was locked.
"Damn it," I whispered under my breath.
I grabbed the doorknob with both hands and twisted with all my strength. It broke, and the door slowly opened, revealing that mutt Sophia owns, growling at me. I roared, and she ran off with her tail between her legs.
"Dumb mutt," I muttered, stepping inside.
I started sniffing around, looking for something with a strong scent of Ashley. I checked the kitchen and living room—nothing. She must have just moved in. I stepped into her room and immediately knew what I was going to have to use...
Sophia
Arms linked, we stepped into a huge room with three long tables, and one at the back that only had chairs on one side. To my left was another huge table covered in a deep red tablecloth, with serving trays filled with all sorts of food.
Merida led me to the table in the back. It was somewhat long, but smaller than the others. She showed me where I would sit and where she would sit—though we weren't next to each other.
"Why can't we just sit next to each other?" I asked.
"Because in a pack, there are rankings and rules," she explained. She stepped behind me and led me to the food. "At dinner, nobody eats until the alpha has taken his first bite. The alpha sits at the middle table. Since you're Jasper's mate, you can sit at the alpha table because he's related to the alpha. I, however, have to sit at one of the other tables because..." She trailed off, staring at the alpha's seat.
I put a hand on her shoulder. "Is everything okay?" I asked.
My small gesture brought her back from her trance.
"And that's just how it is. You need to respect the culture and traditions of our society," she said. "Oh, also... one more thing." I nodded, signaling her to continue.
"You shouldn't ask questions about the alpha or the position. It's a very touchy subject for most members of any pack. Some members would die for their alphas..." She trailed off again, staring at the seat.
"But that's only because some alphas would die for their pack... or endure endless pain just for the group to continue, until it gets too much and they die," she said, tearing up.
I wrapped her in a hug, letting her cry on my shoulder. She said not to ask questions, but that only made me want to know more.
Jasper
I stepped into Ashley's room and immediately knew what I needed. I sniffed around, looking for the strongest scent. Near the bathroom, nothing. Slowly, I moved toward the bed. Closer to the closet, the scent intensified. I opened the closet and saw a hamper, with a pair of underwear lying on top.
"Yup, there you are," I said, picking them up.
I walked back to the kitchen and put them in a bag—I didn't want to walk around with women's underwear and look like a pervert. I grabbed 'my' old leash and went back to the bedroom. I found the mutt inside the bathroom, hiding behind the toilet. I hooked the leash on her and led her out. I put a planter in front of the door to hold it closed.
I ran across the street and into the forest, shifting back into my wolf form and holding the leash in my mouth. The sun was slowly setting—we had to hurry. Ashley had been kidnapped for almost a whole day. God only knows what she was going through...
Ashley
In my sleep, I started dreaming. I was in a huge body of water under a bright blue sky, scattered with clouds. The water was only about a foot deep, so I slowly stood up—and realized I was naked. I didn't feel embarrassed or scared; I felt safe.
I looked around and saw a tall, buff man in the distance. I thought it was Jasper for a moment, but his face and hair were different. We slowly walked toward each other. When we met face-to-face, I felt as if I had known him forever. In my soul, I knew him—and he knew me.
We stood there for a moment... then suddenly, darkness engulfed me. I was scared again.
