Jasper
Jasper
As I was shifting, I heard Ashley say something—but then it was cut off. A moment later, I heard a loud slam of a car door.
I finished shifting.
This can't be good.
I ran out to the street just in time to see a black SUV drive away—with Ashley's scent all over it.
Damn it.
I should have known that wasn't Sophia.
I ran back inside and shifted into human form. I grabbed the pants and looked for her cell phone. Once I found it, I called my pack. The phone rang twice before my friend picked up.
"Hello? Who is this, and how did you get this number?"
"Jared... it's me... Jasper. Listen, no time to talk. We need to—"
I was cut off by another knock at the door.
"I've got to go." I hung up and ran to the door.
I peeked through the peephole and saw a beautiful girl. That must be her actual friend.
Why is everything getting so complicated for me? First the dog shelter, then a pretty girl shows up while her best friend is getting kidnapped.
I grabbed a notepad off the table and quickly wrote:
I won't be back home soon—
Umm... what could I say?
I had to go get more tampons.
Wait, no. That's dumb. Scratch that.
I had to go help my mother. Sorry for not texting.
There. Perfect.
Suddenly, she opened the door and walked in with her mutt.
"Ashley? Where are you, home-girl?" she called.
I quickly shifted and sat in the kitchen.
She walked in with what I'm guessing is supposed to be my "friend." When she saw me, she gasped.
"Aww, you must be Wolf. You're sooo cute!" she said, petting me.
I am not cute. I am second in line to my pack's Alpha. I am not cute.
...But being pet by her somehow made it easier to ignore that she called me cute.
I loved the feeling of her hand in my fur.
Wait... could she be—
She smells like it.
Maybe?
No. Focus. A girl got kidnapped because of you. You need to fix this.
She then pulled her mutt forward and "introduced" us. God, do I hate tamed dogs. I don't have time for this.
She stood up and noticed the note.
"Wait..."
What? Did I misspell something?
"Ashley's mom is dead. And this isn't even her handwriting."
She dropped the note.
Fu—ck.
She started searching through the house, screaming, "Ashley?! Where are you?!"
Luckily for me, she left the front door open. I ran out quickly.
I heard Ashley's friend yelling and running after me.
I'm sorry. You smell like my mate... but I have to go save Ashley.
I sprinted into the woods to lose her—but damn, she's fast. She almost caught up to me, even at full speed.
I pushed harder, racing back toward my pack's territory.
When I crossed into it, a group of wolves jumped me.
Ashley
I was in a daze, my head pounding.
I tried lifting my hand to my head—but it was tied to my legs.
"What the fu—ck happened?" I groaned.
I opened my eyes. I was still in the SUV.
I looked over and saw the man who took me. He was huge, covered in scars, wearing tattered pants and a sleeveless sweatshirt. In the front seat were two more men dressed almost the same.
The man beside me was staring at me with pure evil in his eyes.
"FUCK!" I yelled and grabbed the door handle on my side, throwing it open.
We were deep in the forest.
He grabbed my legs, but I started squirming. I twisted onto my back and kicked him in the face, giving him a bloody nose. He let go to cover it—but the car sped up.
Just tuck and roll, Ashley. Like in the movies.
I leaned up and dove out of the moving car, spinning and tumbling into the grassy forest. I rolled hard, feeling the ropes loosen around my legs.
I slammed into a tree and stopped—probably cracking a few ribs.
Pain shot through my chest.
I forced myself to stand and saw the ropes had come loose. I bolted into the forest.
Running past trees, sharp pain stabbed through my chest with every breath.
I might have broken ribs.
But for a moment, I thought I might actually get away.
Then I heard a howl behind me.
My legs kicked into overdrive, ignoring the pain as it worsened. My slippers flew off behind me.
There is no way I'm becoming some guy's sex doll.
I looked back.
Three wolves were chasing me.
"Geez, is everyone a fu—cking werewolf around here?!" I muttered.
I turned forward—and tripped.
I fell headfirst into a stream, smashing my head against the rocks.
My vision blurred. My body went limp.
I heard the wolves reach me—and then shift.
"Shit. J's not going to like this," one of them said. "Yo, Dean, get her back to the car and make sure she doesn't die or wake up. Got it?"
"Yes, sir," another man replied.
I heard footsteps getting closer.
And then everything went dark.
