Sophia
I shoved my bag in the corner of the closet. I didn't want to touch any of Ashley's things. I stepped out of the closet and looked around; it felt odd, like I was in someone else's home, uninvited. I shook the feeling off and stepped across the hall. I opened the door to find Jared sitting at his desk, looking over some papers with a serious expression.
"I need you to sign these," he said, pointing to a stack of papers in front of him without even looking up.
I closed the door behind me and stepped inside, picking up the small stack of papers. "What are these?" I asked.
He sighed. "It's just some documentation saying you'll stand as Luna. Ashley didn't have to sign anything because she already had the rights to the position, while you were chosen and agreed upon it," he explained in an irritated tone.
"Oh, okay," I said, picking up a pen and signing at the bottom. "Is that all? Do you need any help? I might be able to assist."
He looked over at me. "No, I'm the new alpha. I'll take care of all the business stuff. Your job is to make sure the pack supports me and doesn't rebel. Just do your job, and I'll do mine." He set the papers back down, sandwiched them in a file, then shoved it in one of the drawers, sliding mine in too.
I looked at him. "Okay, just let me know if you need anything," I said, walking out.
I stepped into the bedroom and opened the door. As I was about to shut it, I saw Jared walk out and head down the hall. Where could he be going? I asked myself.
I stepped out once he exited the hall. Slowly, I crept down the stairs, my curiosity getting the better of me. I watched him go down the main entrance stairs, and once I heard him at the bottom, I peaked over the wall. He was looking around, making sure no one was watching, before pushing in a small board and sliding a hidden door open.
Could that be where Ashley is? I thought. I should check tomorrow.
I quietly made my way back upstairs and climbed into bed, placing one of my pillows on the floor next to me for Coco. I drifted off to sleep...
Ashley
Jared sat up straight and laughed at me. "Oh, you're wondering why you're still alive?" He leaned forward, his face dangerously close to mine.
I glared at him, but he only stood up straight and put his hands behind his back. "Well, if you must know, you're here to be my plaything. My toy, merely a pet," he spelled out with an icy smirk. "It's quite ironic," he added, walking around the basement. "All you wanted was a simple dog, but instead, you got dragged into this hell of a life. No matter, I'll take care of you," he said, placing his hand over his cold heart, trying to make his voice sound sincere.
"And what's your plan, then? Why all this time pretending to be the nice guy? What changed?" I asked, my voice seething with anger.
He sighed. "Oh, nothing changed. This has been my plan all along. I did all of this because Roman was weak!" He yelled, getting worked up. "Roman wasn't fit to lead!" He took a deep breath, calming himself.
"And why is that? What makes you fit to lead?" I challenged, trying to get him to show his true intentions.
"Well, Roman has you, for one—oh, wait, had you," he sneered. "Guess he wasn't trying hard enough to keep you. But as for me, I no longer have a mate. No weakness. No chain to hold me back. But don't worry," he said, stepping closer and tilting my head up with his pointer finger, forcing me to look into his cold, empty eyes. "Your dear friend Sophia is my Luna," he said, grinning wickedly.
My eyes went wide. "S-She would never go with a scumbag like you!" I yelled, my voice trembling with disbelief.
He laughed again, letting go of my chin. "Go with me? She's the one who came to me," he said, holding up his arms like he was innocent. "She came to me and offered her assistance. She said she could persuade the people into liking me, and all she wanted in return was the Luna position!" His voice grew louder.
I looked down at my knees, feeling a pit form in my stomach. She wouldn't... She's been my best friend forever—there's no way she would ever turn on me.
"You're lying!" I screamed at him, hot tears falling from my face.
"Oh, don't worry," he said, wiping away my tears mockingly. "She did ask for you to be safe, and I gave her my word. But too bad... my word didn't mean shit to me," he added, kicking me in the ribs. "I hope Roman feels this. That would make it all the better," he smirked.
I hunched over, barely able to support myself on my hands and knees, and looked up at him. "Where is Roman?" I asked flatly.
Jared crouched down to my level. "In a deep, dark cell—slowly dying," he whispered in my ear before standing back up and walking toward the stairs. "You be good now," he called as he left.
I heard the front door slam shut, and I knew he had locked me in again. Trapped with that psychopath, and Roman is dying while my best friend is betraying me...
The Next Morning...
Jasper
Running from rogues was never fun. They always work in groups, trying to corner you. But, as always, I managed to escape. I tried to stay close to my brother's lands, just in case I needed to rescue Sophia at any moment.
As the rogues passed and gave up, I started walking toward the west side of the pack territory when I smelled something—a faint scent of blood. Now, blood is a common smell outside of pack lands because there are no rules, no one to stop you from killing whoever you want. But this blood smelled familiar... It smells like Ashley.
I followed the scent to a cabin about half a mile away from pack lands. I peered from behind a tree and saw the cabin. There was a padlock on the door, and masking spray covered the air. I walked up to the front porch and looked through the window. The scent was almost completely gone due to the masking spray.
I eyed the lock. The only way to get in would be to break in...
