"Hey, it's me again. Today is day 42. And finally, something interesting happened."

CAROLINE STOOD IN FRONT of the bathroom sink, wiping away her bloody lip while searching for the first aid kit.

Her father just finished with a lecture before going out hunting and ended it with a slap to the face. Caroline forgot to bring him lunch. And in this world 'you can't forget things' her father says. 'Can't afford to make mistakes, stupid girl. Makes men like me get angry. And when we get angry, we start getting violent.' That's what he said before making his daughter bleed.

Violent. Aggressive. Brutal. Abusive. It's all the same thing.

"A man, Rick Grimes, showed up on Hershel's front door with his dying son. No, he wasn't bitten. Otis accidentally shot him when he and my father were hunting."

Caroline glanced out of the window and saw a man with a cowboy hat carrying a boy. She made her way downstairs as she heard Hershel yelling. Caroline watched from the doorway of the spare bedroom as Hershel, Patricia, and Maggie prepped the small boy,

Soon enough the father left the room and came back with another stranger along with Otis and Caroline's father. "You know his blood type?" Hershel asked the father, Rick,

"A-positive. S-same as mine." He stuttered, still trying to accept the fact that his son was shot and possibly dying.

"That's fortunate. Don't wander far, I'm gonna need you." Hershel looked at Otis and Caroline's father, Graham, "What happened?"

"We were tracking a buck. Bullet went through it. Went clean through." Otis explained,

"The deer slowed the bullet down, which certainly saved his life, but it did not go through clean. It broke up into pieces. If I can get the bullet fragments out..." Hershel peeked into the wound, "And I'm countin' six."

Otis went over to his wife, Patricia, "I never saw him. Not until he was on the ground."

"Lori doesn't know?" Rick asked,

"No, she..." The other man began,

"My wife doesn't know...My wife doesn't know." Rick cried and Shane whispered in his ear.

"Once Rick told us that his wife didn't know about Carl's injury, I knew I had to go find her. I didn't care what my father would do to me. I wanted to help."

After Shane and Otis left for the high school to gather the medical supplies they needed for the surgery, Caroline grabbed her softball bat and left on a horse to find Rick's wife without her father's permission. She knew she would be punished later, but right now her focus was on finding the boy's mother.
