"Not a lover."

•••

Shawn.

Cars and people filled the busy streets of New York City. The constant honking at bad drivers, the chatter of people talking. Done talking to people who aren't even noticing but stuck on their phones. The aroma of neighboring restaurants that were either packed or eager to take the others business.

Morning traffic. At the moment was my worst enemy. If I discovered anything about the city was no matter what you were bound to get traffic. Whether for a few minutes or a few hours.

I honked my horn once again trying to signal the idiot in front of me that the lights been green for at least a minute. The car finally decided to go forward relieving me from going to their window and talking to them. I drove past them of course to do what almost every drive does.

I went to check who was driving. It was a guy, maybe in his late 20s, next to him was a girl. She sat up and her hair looked a mess. She wiped her mouth and only then did I realize what happened.

I rolled my eyes, typical ignorant thing for anyone to do while driving. I mean forbid they get in an accident and her head blocks the airbag from meeting his chest.

Some who know me might have told me I was jealous or wished I had someone. Someone to even consider doing public escapades with. Though truth is, is in more involved in my job than commitment.

I'm also only 24 and just don't see the point in trying to find love so soon. I had been in many relationships through high school and college and even a few months ago. That one made me realize I didn't want anything. So I took a job where we weren't allowed to have personal connections with anyone.

"Hello Agent Mendes." The receptionist welcomed with a smile.

The warm smiles that your grandmother always gives you. Her eyes and smile crinkled as she did so.

"Good morning Linda, I'm still waiting for that date." I tell her and give her a wink.

She just laughed, "Oh Shawn I'll have to ask my husband."

I sighed as I leaned against her desk, "I'm telling you we need to run away, just the two of us."

That made her laugh more, "Oh you're too sweet Shawn but I'm sorry my heart belongs to Richard."

She told me with a smile and I faked being hurt. I placed my hand over my heart and gasped.

"You're breaking my heart Linda, make sure to tell Richard I said hi and that he is one lucky guy." I tell her as I walked away and towards the elevator.

"Okay hun." She told me.

I walked over and slid my key card to open up the elevator. I walked in and pressed the top floor button. The doors were about to close when a arm came between them. The doors reopened and in walked one of my good friends, Matt.

"Oh hey Mendes." He said as he walked over to stand by me.

The doors then closed and the elevator started to go up. With each floor that we passed a number would go up and the lights on the button would go off and on. Then there was the constant dings.
