Matt and I didn't sleep at all, we stayed up all night at the local police station. We were in one of the conference rooms and on speaker with the office back in New York. They had been helping us figure everything out and try our hardest to find Maddox.
They were interrogating Hernandez and asking if he had any idea of her. They even showed him a picture and he claimed him not his men touched her. I wish I was there to try and get him to talk but I couldn't do much from LA.
"Okay well who do you have of possible suspects?" I asked as I put together the evidence board.
"Well Hernandez could still be a suspect, we don't exactly know if he's lying." Our boss said from the speaker.
I sighed feeling like we wouldn't get anywhere with him. He was a dead end unless they gave him some sort of plea bargain. Though that was definitely not going to happen especially because he broke out of prison already.
"Okay who else there has to be more people were missing." I told him.
"Well has she ever talked about any guys in her life while you were there?" He asked me.
That's when it clicked her ex boyfriend, the guy seemed like a stalker. A little possessive of Maddox and then there was the incident in the cafe. He could be considered violent or a danger to her.
"She did have a boyfriend an ex really, I came into contact with him and he seemed possessive of her." I remembered.
"Do you know his name or where he could be?" My boss asked.
I realized I didn't know anything about this guy besides his first name. But I knew someone who might know him a little better.
"His name is Trevor but I might know someone who knows more." I told him.
I then walked out the room and took my phone out of my pocket. I dialed Jess's number and waited for her to answer. It rang and rang, come on pick up.
"Hello?" She answered.
I was a little relieved when she did, "Jess thank god, I need you to come down to the police station right away."
"Uh Okay yeah I'll be right there." She said quickly.
Just then I hung up and walked back into the conference room. Matt was looking though her files.
"Wait did she ever talk to you about her foster home? About the people that lived there?" Matt asked me as I walked in.
I shut the door and walked over towards him, "Uh she told me what I already knew but if you're asking if she's ever remained contact with them then no."
"Is it possible that maybe they could've found her and done something?" We heard our boss ask.
I thought about it, "I mean it's possible, she said she called the cops on him so check anything relating to the son of her second home."
"Yeah I'll check it out." Matt said as he walked out of the room.
I then wrote down the names on the board. So far we had Hernandez, the ex Trevor, and then the son from her second foster home. I tried to think about who else it could've been but my thoughts were interrupted when the door opened.
"Hey I came as soon as I could, did you find her?" Jess asked as she walked through the door.
"Who's that?" My boss asked clearly still on speaker.
"Uh it's Maddox's friend here in LA, listen Jess you wouldn't happen to know anything about her ex would you?" I asked her.
She set down her bag, "I mean of course well not a whole bunch but probably enough. Why? Do you think he abducted her?"
"We're not sure yet we're trying to think of anyone that could be a possible suspect." I explained to her.
She nodded, "Okay so what do you want to know?"
I then asked her for everything she knew about her ex. I wrote it all down on the board making sure I had everything.
"God I knew he was crazy but I didn't think he was crazy enough to do something like this." She said.
"Mendes where is Matt with the other suspect's information. Once you figure that out I'm going to need you both to check them out." I heard my boss say through the speaker.
Just then Matt walked back in through the door. He looked upset and that's something I didn't want to see right now.
"What?" I asked.
"It's a Dead end with the brother, he's still in jail which should've went off as a red flag. I mean she did only turn him in when she was 18 so it's only been a couple years. We can cross him off the list he's not getting out for another few years." Matt informed us.
I nodded as I ran my fingers through my hair, "Okay then I need you to go pick up that Trevor guy. Bring him in for questioning because we're running out of time and suspects."
Matt nodded, "Yeah okay I'll bring back up and let you know if anything happens."
"Good keep me updated." I told him.
He then walked out and I sat there looking at the board. There's something missing, something I'm not getting. But what?
"Jess how long have you known Maddox?" I asked.
"Uh for about three or four years now why?" She asked.
I looked over at her, "And was there anything out of the ordinary? Or any thoughts on who it could be?"
She looked at the board and studied it, I could tell she was really thinking about it. She then sat back in her chair and stared off into space before she sat up.
"Oh well I know she was given up for adoption right? I always asked her if she would ever try and find her real dad." She said.
A light bulb went off into my head, of course. Her biological father, but I don't see why it would be him. He's a rich man that didn't want her so why would be abduct her?
"Did she ever find him or contact him?" I asked.
She shook her head, "Nope she said she wanted nothing to do with him. She blamed him for what happened in her foster homes. The abuse and just a shitty life, she needed someone to blame and it was him."
"Boss I'm going to need to know everything you need on Maddox's biological father. I need it faxed here now." I told him.
We could either be so close or so far.
