Cosmo pulled the bed sheets off Willow. He opened his eyes, holding on to the covers, then sat up. Only the silhouette could be seen in the dark, but Cosmo felt his hand.
"The streets aren't patrolled at night. We have to go now," He whispered.
"Is Ivy awake?" Willow asked louder.
"Please be quiet. Someone may hear us. Yes, she is, she's downstairs. Let's go."
Cosmo was careful not to lose touch of Willow's palm as they made their way slowly to the first floor. He tripped a couple times himself, but managed to keep up every time without even being noticed by Willow. This was nothing compared to what he had experienced in the mountains.
His wings were spread wide. He tried not to take up too much space with them, pressing the feathers to his ribs and wrapping them around his waist. It was enough of a complex acrobatic trick for them to sting just a bit, but he didn't mind.
When he put his feet off the least step, his eyes had already gotten used to the dark. He could see the backpacks piled up by the door, and Ivy standing against the wall.
"You fine?" She breathed out, making sure her speech was as quiet as possible.
"Yes," he pulled Willow towards the door and picked up one of the backpacks. Then he handed it out before putting his own one on. Ivy was already clutching the handles in her palms.
"Alright, be careful," she pulled the doorknob. Cosmo could hear the rattling of the keys that were lost between her fingers. The backpack rose.
When she had left and locked the door, she dropped the backpack and slipped the keys into her pocket. Cosmo was watching as she pulled the laces on and then continued walking. He caught himself still holding Willow's warm palm.
"You sure that we can get there on foot?" Ivy asked.
"I hope so."
He saw the building next door, which was a four-floor block of flats. A few of the windows were still shining, and figures were moving around. He blamed himself for not knowing anyone from that house.
