Aubri.
Liam guides me to our seats, which are right next to each other, so we can talk easily without having to lean over and disrupt anyone else.
He laughs as he watches me close the window as well as fasten and tighten my seat belt.
Amused, he inquires "settled yet?"
Flustered, I respond "The longest flight I've ever been on was about 3 hours. Not necessarily a flier." I feel trapped, not being able to have some control in how things turn out kind of freak me out.
Liam nods "neither was I for a long time. I get it. You get used to it after a while though. Let's change the subject, maybe that will help. How long have you known sign language? That's not something most people just know, if you don't mind my asking."
I nod. It's true. "Well sign language is just one of those things I've wanted to know for a while & I speak with my hands a lot so it just seemed like a good idea. Definitely came in handy today."
"Prepare for take off. Please make sure all seat belts are fastened & tightened, all trays are in neutral position and that all bags that are not in the overhead compartments are stored under the seat. Please direct your attention to the attendant in the aisle as they go through the procedure in case of emergency.
Please turn off all cellphone and wireless devices. Once we reach cruising altitudes, some devices may be permitted for use."
I turn to watch the attendant as Liam is pushing his bag further under his seat and putting on his seatbelt.
"This flight is approximately 6 hours. We should be touching down at Heathrow at about 4am, NYC time/ about 9am London time," the pilot continues, "there will be a few on flight movies to choose from and attendants will be around shortly to help you all with food and snack selections. Thanks for flying Brit Airways."
Liam turns his attention back to me, "So tell me about yourself."
I chew my lip a bit before answering. I absolutely hate this question. I know myself, my likes/ dislikes, but when someone asks me to tell them about me... It's like I never knew myself at all.
"Well I recently graduated college with a degree in Comparative Literature, my minor was Journalism. I'm 22. I go by Aubri, Bri or just B. I read a lot... Umm I love traveling, but take off and descents scare me. Not a fan of Turbulence also. Ahhh I can't think of anything else," I laugh.
Liam smiles, "well I'm Liam Payne, I sing a bit in a band. We're pretty popular," he jokes, making us both laugh. "I'm pretty normal, aside from the band so that's me."
The attendant passing by hands us pillows and blankets for the flight and we choose a movie to watch once the plane takes off.
The plane begins takeoff and Liam laughs at how hard I'm gripping the arm rests. "If you want, you hand hold my hand, just don't squeeze it like you're doing those arm rests, okay?" I nod, taking his hand and trying to breathe as I feel the plane becoming airborne.
"Your hand is so tiny," Liam comments as he looks down at our intertwined fingers. "My hands basically encases yours," he laughs. I look at our hands, his tanned & mine chocolate.
I'm holding hands with my fave because he feels bad for the arm rests. Bless him.
When the plane hits cruising altitude, I open the window and stare out at the lights contrasting against the darkness of the night sky.
"Beautiful isn't it," Liam leans over my shoulder to look out, "New York looks amazing at nighttime."
"So what are you going to be doing in London?"
"Well, I'm working in a newly formed department at a publishing company, so editing, proof reading, things of that sort. I'm really excited for it. I don't start until mid April though. They're giving me time to get adjusted to the time and move into my apartment and stuff."
Liam nods, "that's cool. Where are you going to be living? If you don't mind my asking"
"No, no , not at all. I got an apartment in The Docklands Apartment block, so I'm excited to move in and see it in person."
Liam studies me. "Interesting."
I quirk an eyebrow as I look at him. "What?"
"I have an apartment there..."
I feel the heat creeping up my neck as I realize what he's probably thinking. "No, oh my gosh. I didn't know. The company gave me an option of three apartments and I chose that one because it's closest. I didn't know." I bury my face in my hands to hide the red that's probably made it's way into my cheeks.
Liam laughs and scratches his neck, "well I guess we'll be neighbors. When do you move in?"
"Friday, today is Tuesday.. So weds in London. I'll probably just hang at a hotel until Friday," I yawn out as I start positioning a pillow under my head and wrapping up in the blanket. "I don't know how much longer I'll be half watching this movie," I tell Liam.
Glancing over, he's already asleep, his hand still over mine.
