Not much of a fan of flying during turbulence.
I'm jostled awake by the plane shaking and the pilot coming on the loud speaker to tell everyone to put on their seatbelts. Remembering the box in my pocket, my hands instinctively go to the zipper on my jacket.
It's still here.
Breathing a sigh of relief, I zip my pocket back up and readjust my headphones, in a futile attempt at falling back to sleep with everything going on around me and my nerves. The last time I wanted to ask my girlfriend to marry me, I found out she was cheating on me and she had gotten pregnant and lost the child without me picking up on it. Shaking my head, trying to clear my thoughts, I notice a familiar pair of brown eyes watching me intently.
You've got to be kidding me.
Pasting on the most polite face that I can muster, I glance over at Sophia, who's studying me with an intense look. Snapping herself out of it, I realize that i've been reaching in and out of my jacket, checking for the ring box.
Get a grip Payne. You're going to blow your own secret.
After exchanging a few pleasantries with Sophia, I go back into my own world and stay there until I'm grabbing my suitcase of the luggage belt at the airport and hopping into my car to go home. Flipping open the lid of the ring box, I study the vintage engagement ring I had designed specially for Aubri. The white gold ring is fashioned after Cinderella's carriage with a honey brown diamond in the center and white diamonds on the sides for the wheels. She'll never admit it but I know she loves to watch Disney classics when i'm on tour. I hope she loves this ring and me as much as I love her.
I can't wait to see her.
Cranking up the shuffle on my phone, "Disconnected" blasts through my car stereo and all my fears and doubts melt away.
She's my sweet escape.
