Liam.
Fear.
That's the only emotion. The only thought I could muster when I was given the news.
"Your wife has been found. A man brought her into the hospital and provided all the pertinent information, but refused to say how he came into contact with her until you get there. Sir, for your safety, I don't advise-"
Pushing the man out of the way, I see my band mates running out of the rooms they were being held in and making a beeline for the door, almost trampling each other to get out first.
Everyone's worried.
Piling into a police van, we speed to the hospital, barely letting the vehicle come to a complete stop before hopping out and running through the automatic doors, spilling into the emergency intake area.
Eyes glancing about wildly, I spot the nurses station and by some miracle, have enough air to tell them who I am and who I'm here for. The nurse looks up at me, flustered and an emotion I can't place but, I don't have time to think about that.
"She's fine," the nurse soothes, rattling my nerves.
"I didn't ask if she was fine. I asked you where she is." I snap, the stress of the past few hours breaking my exterior for good.
"I'm sorry- you have to wait over there like everyone else for the doctor to come see you."
You have got to be kidding me.
Letting out a string of curses, I walk over to the waiting area, stopping only when I spot a familiar face sitting in between two police officers, hands bound by a zip tie.
Chris?
Eyebrows knitting in confusion, I hear Niall let out a "you've got to be f*cking kidding me" followed closely by Zayn with a "is this a f*cking joke?"
One of the officers stands and walks over to us. "I can see emotions are high already, you don't have to do this right now. We can take him in for questioning. He has to talk at some point."
I laugh, "Is this what you all get paid for? This is the man that called you to tell you my wife was missing. Bright, the lot of you."
The officer stiffens, his eyes narrowing. "Since we're so "bright" as you term it, explain why the same man who reported your wife missing is the one to bring her in?"
That's a secret he'll never tell.
Chris clears his throat and looks at me pointedly. Whatever he has to say isn't for these ears. I've learned that much about him over the years. Nodding, the officers step off to the side to talk to the other guys and Chris rubs at his wrists, previously restrained by a too tight zip tie.
"Sophia's dead." He states bluntly, voice lowered to an urgent whisper. "I can't tell you how or why because it's not my place, but she won't be an issue anymore. Aubri is a tough one. Girl survived a 13 foot drop with only a broken leg and a couple broken ribs. Clean breaks so no worries about fragments getting into her bloodstream. I can't speak for her mind because she appeared to be fully cognizant when I was speaking to her." He pauses before speaking again, "She loves that baby, Liam. Even falling to what she thought was her demise, her hands were cradling her stomach. From what I can tell, the baby seems to be under stress, the doctors will have to give you a bigger picture."
It feels like my bones have turned into mush as I sink to the floor. It's a lot to take in.
I honestly and truly loved Sophia at one point, so on a level- I'm sad that it had to end this way. The day has taken everything out of me. All I want is to see my wife.
Chris glances over my shoulder briefly and nods lightly, by the time I turn, whoever he was nodding at is gone and the doctor is here running down Aubri's condition.
Swelling on the brain, 4 broken ribs, broken leg, fractured wrist, bleeding, but the baby appears to be okay for now so they're monitoring for any changes or they'll do an emergency c section.
"Your wife is a fighter Mr.Payne. She's all bandaged up now and resting. You can see her when she wakes up." I shake the doctors hand and the tense energy in the waiting room lightens, the guys are cracking light jokes and Chris is sitting off to himself, pretty quiet.
I've never asked him about his life outside of how I know him- as my friend and sometimes extra security detail. The fact that he found Aubri with literally no clues that's he's offering is a touch unsettling but, I'm grateful nonetheless.
A bell goes off at the nurses station and a few of them go running into one of the rooms and Chris stands.
"That's her room."
The head nurse is yelling for me to stop walking and I ignore her. I've already been away from her for too long when she needed me. The scene in front of me stops me dead in my tracks at the doorway.
She looks gone.
Aubri is pale, her skin a darkened purple in places where bruising is forming. Her curly hair still partially matted with leaves and dirt, eyelids flickering slightly as a permanent frown is etched in her features. Large amounts of her body are covered in casts and stitches- her lip busted and bleeding. Her finger is tapping erratically as doctors and nurses push me out of the way to attend to her.
Zayn, catching me as I stumble, looks into the room and starts pulling me from the door, saying I don't need to see this.
I need to. I need to memorize every curve of her face. I don't know if this is the last I'm going to see of her. I don't know if her condition will get better. I don't know.
No.
Struggling against Zayn, I'm only aware of the tears streaming down my face when I hear an orderly asking Zayn if he should sedate me. It's only then I realize that Zayn, Niall and the orderly are pulling me from the door as I yell like a madman.
I yell for her. If I'm louder, would she hear me? Would she see me?
Amidst all of this, I register a female figure just outside of my peripheral line of sight and I turn to see who it is.
Liv.
Are you f*cking kidding me?
I yell at her. I hurl insults, I rage. Liv stands there stoic, taking it all in before telling me she wants to talk to me.
There's nothing to talk about.
Oh but there is.
