Chapter Seven: Because We're Friends.

Jessica Washington

Friday finally arrives, ending the long first week at school. Unfortunately, the day starts badly. First, I sleep through my alarm, and wake up with five minutes left to get to school - keeping in mind that it is a half an hour's walk away. Also, I didn't have time to have a shower last night, so I also have to quickly have a shower.

Accepting the fact that I'm going to be late anyway, I take my time in the shower, also deciding to wash my brown hair while I'm at it. I don't bother drying my hair, leaving the straggly wet strands falling down my back. I decide to wear some dark blue skinny jeans and a dark green hoodie, which I wear all the time. I put on my white plimsoles and grab my things, before heading to school.

When I arrive at school, it's already halfway through first lesson, which is English Literature. This is good for me, since I didn't particularly want to sit next to River for the whole lesson, anyway.

When I walk in, I apologise for being late, before sitting down next to River. I take out my book and copy down the notes off the board, before focusing entirely on the lesson. Neither of us attempt to make a conversation, probably because he thinks I won't reply. I will speak to him, eventually, I just can't be bothered at the moment.

The time to speak to River unfortunately does arrive, since Olivia chose today to be ill, so she didn't come into school. This is my worst nightmare, as I'm now sat at a lunch table by myself. Well, I was alone, until River came and sat next to me.

"Why are you here, River?" I ask with a sigh, knowing that he probably won't be leaving anytime soon.

"You were sat alone, I thought you looked lonely, so I'm sitting with you because we're friends," River replies, rolling his eyes.

"We're friends?' I ask, raising an eyebrow.

"Well, that's what you said the other night. After last night, I'm not sure," River replies, honestly. A few people are looking in our direction, probably wondering why someone like River is speaking to someone like me.

"Well, it might just be me being dramatic, but I don't think that friends do what you did," I reply, taking a sip of my water. River frowns in confusion, probably having no idea what he has done wrong.

"What did I do?" River asks, confused.

"Well, Bella slapped me the other day. And then, as my friend, you had sex with her the day after. I don't know about you, but that isn't something I would do to my friends," I tell him, and River's confusion clears.

"I was drunk. I promise you, Jess, I would never do that to you if I was sober. I'm sorry," River apologises, and I bite my lip nervously, not knowing what to say.

"Okay," I eventually say, accepting his apology. I was probably overreacting anyway. I mean, he can fuck who he wants. It's nothing to do with me.

"Okay as in you forgive me?" River asks, and I nod.

"I was overreacting anyway, don't worry about it," I sigh, and River grins.

"You weren't overreacting, it's fine," River smiles, running his fingers through his hair.

"Okay, book boy," I reply, smiling slightly.
