Chapter Ten: Is That A Yes Or A No?

Jessica Washington

It's Monday the next morning, so I'm reluctant to get out of bed when my alarm rings. I switch off the alarm and get out of bed, before having a quick shower and getting dressed. I brush my teeth and my hair, before putting on a little makeup.

I arrive at school on time, and head to English Literature, my first class. I sit down in my seat and wait for the class to start.

"Jessica Washington," I hear River say, as he sits down beside me.

"Book boy," I reply, smiling. The lesson starts, and we sit in silence as we concentrate on the lesson, but after the lesson finishes, I speak to him as we walk to our next lessons.

"What do you have?" I ask him, curiously. We're walking down the corridor together, and I'm trying to ignore the number of strange looks we're getting from the other people in the corridor.

"Photography, how about you?" River answers, and I roll the eyes. Of course he takes Photography. That was what people took when they didn't know what else to take, hoping that it would improve their Instagram feed or whatever.

"History," I reply, and River nods.

"Sounds fun," River comments, as we reach my History classroom.

"Well, I'm here, so I'll see you later," I tell him, to which River smiles.

"See you at lunch," River smiles, before walking in the direction we just came from. That's sweet, he walked me to my class even though his class is on the other side of the school.

I sit down in my seat for history, and it's about halfway through the lesson when the boy next to me, Luke, starts speaking to me. I've sat next to him for about a year now, since none of us knew anyone in the class. He's on the football team, I think he plays as a midfielder, but I could be wrong.

"So, what are you doing anything this weekend?" Luke asks, as we write down the answers to the questions on the board.

"Not a lot, I'm working all day Sunday, and I'll probably just spend Saturday watching films or something. How about you?" I reply, realising how boring my life is. Luke grins.

"Well, I was hoping that on Saturday, maybe we could go for lunch or something?" Luke questions, and I'd be lying if I said that this didn't surprise me. Does he mean like, as a date?

"Yes, I mean as a date," Luke tells me, and I raise an eyebrow. Did I accidentally say that aloud, or am I just that readable?

"Oh, um," I say, still shocked. I mean, I never thought he would want to, I didn't think he liked me like that, at all.

"You can say that you don't want to," Luke tells me, and I smile slightly. I mean, I can't say that I don't like him, I'm just not sure that I like him in that way. But then that might just be because I've never thought about him that way, I don't know.

"No, it's not that, I'm just shocked," I assure him, and Luke grins. It's not that he isn't attractive, either, because he is definitely good looking. He's probably the definition of tall, dark and handsome. He's at least six foot something, and he has dark brown hair, and he is definitely attractive. He also has tanned skin, and his eyes are also chocolate brown.

"So is that a yes or a no?" Luke asks, and I smile.

"It's a yes, what time and where?" I reply, and Luke smiles, brightly. Olivia is going to be so proud of me.

"How about one in the afternoon in that milkshake place on the corner? I can meet you there," Luke suggests, and I nod.

"Okay, I'll see you there," Luke smiles, before the bell for the end of the lesson rings.

The day ends quickly, and after school I head to work, where I'm actually working with someone. The person I am working with, Kayla, helps me by filling the shelves with the books that have been returned as part of the library part of the shop.

This takes a few hours, so my whole shift is spent doing this. Once we have finished filling the shelves, I head back home, where my parents are sat watching TV.

"Jessica, can you come in here for a second?" my mum calls from the living room. I frown, worry immediately filling my mind. What if her cancer had got worse or something?

I walk into the living room and sit down on one of the chairs. My parents don't look upset or anything, which makes me feel less worried.

"What is it?" I ask, curiously.

"I just wanted to remind you about your auntie's wedding, because it's in just over a month. Your auntie said you could invite someone to come with you as well, as most people are going to be either younger or older than you. I just wanted to remind you," my mum tells me, and I nod. I meant to ask Olivia to come, but I kept forgetting.

"Okay, I'll ask Olivia," I reply, and my mum nods.

"Okay, have you got a dress yet?" my mum asks, and I shake my head.

"Not yet, I think I'm going to go shopping with Olivia at some point to find something," I answer.

"Just don't leave it too late," my mum says, and I nod.

"Don't worry, I'm all organised," I reply, before I head upstairs to my bedroom.

Once I'm upstairs, I take out my phone and call Olivia to ask about the wedding, asking her to come.

"That's the weekend that I'm going to Glasgow to see my grandparents, so I can't. Sorry," Olivia apologises, and I groan, remembering her mentioning this a few months ago. She was really looking forward to it, because she only sees her grandparents once a year.

"Disappointing," I reply, and Olivia laughs.

"I'm sorry. But I will come with you to find a dress," Olivia replies, and I sigh, rolling my eyes.

"Okay," I reply, sighing.

"How about inviting River? I'm sure he'd like to go with you," Olivia suggests, and at the mention of River, I look out my window to see his empty room, so he must be out somewhere. I doubt he would go to a wedding, I don't even want to go, if I'm being honest. If my date with Luke goes well on Saturday, maybe he could come.

"Maybe," I shrug, dismissively.

"Anyway, I'm having dinner, so I'll speak to you later," Olivia tells me, before hanging up. I put my phone down, before going downstairs to have my own dinner.
