Chapter Thirty-Three: Oxford Day.
♡ Jessica Washington ♡
Today is the day, January 10th. The day I find out if my interview at Oxford was successful. I was up all night, thinking about today. This day could change my life. If I do get a placement at Oxford, it'll obviously only be conditional, as if I do bad in my A-levels at the end of this year I'll lose my place. Chances are I won't get the place, anyway.
I jump out of bed early in the morning, but there is no email as of yet, not that I'm surprised. I have a shower and get dressed, before once again hopefully checking my emails, yet again to see nothing.
"You're in a good mood," my dad comments as I hop downstairs.
"It's Oxford day, dad. Today's the day," I tell my dad, even though I know that he knows fully well what day it is.
"I know. I know that you'll be a great asset to whatever university you attend, but just make sure you keep your options open. Just don't get your hopes up, okay? I don't want to see you get hurt," my dad says to me, and I nod, smiling.
"I know, dad. I applied for Bath University and Edinburgh University as well, so I have three options, so hopefully one will work out," I assure my dad, who nods.
"Good. Well, as I imagine you will be on your phone all day anyway, call me if you get the confirmation email," my dad tells me, before hugging me.
"I will," I promise, before I head off to school.
When I arrive, Olivia is already waiting at my locker.
"Any email yet?" Olivia asks, and I shake my head.
"Don't worry, it'll come. It would be silly to turn you down," Olivia assures me, and I smile.
"Yeah, well although my heart is set on Oxford, Bath and Edinburgh are both amazing schools so as long as I get good grades at the end of the year it'll be okay," I say, before the bell rings for first lesson. I say goodbye to Olivia, before heading to English Literature. I sit down next to River, who raises an eyebrow.
"You okay?" River asks, and I nod.
"Yeah, it's Oxford day," I reply, and River smiles.
"You're going to get in, don't worry," River assures me, and I smile.
"I'm going to choose to believe you," I tell him, before the lesson begins.
Throughout the lesson, I continuously refresh my phone under the table anxiously, waiting to see if I receive an email.
And soon later, my phone vibrates and River immediately turns to me, watching my reaction as I read the email.
"Oh my god," I exhale, shocked. River raises an eyebrow, and a wide smile crosses my face.
"I got in," I say, in shock, smiling.
"That's amazing, Jess! Congratulations!" River grins, hugging me.
"Sorry, what's going on?" Miss Ashworth asks, confused.
"I got a conditional place at Oxford!" I grin, and Miss Ashworth's eyes widen in surprise.
"Congratulations! Wow, that's brilliant," Miss Ashworth smiles, a smile which I easily return. I am going to Oxford! As long I get the grades, obviously, but I'm counting that as an acceptance.
"Thank you," I smile, before the lesson begins. But by this point, I've missed the whole lesson due to how infatuated with the idea of Jessica Washington, the future Oxford student.
At the end of the lesson, I phone my dad to tell him the news. And his reaction nearly makes me cry. He sounded so proud of me, something I don't feel as if I've seen from him in a while. It also reassures me that mum would be proud of me. And that is what I want most, to make my parents proud.
When lunch arrives, I see Olivia for the first time since this morning. When she sees me, she screams slightly, running towards me and hugging me.
"I'm so proud of you, Jess!" Olivia says loudly as she hugs me, and I laugh, rolling my eyes.
"Thank you," I laugh, not being able to wipe the smile from my face.
"I can't believe you're going to Oxford," Olivia grins, stepping back from me.
"Only if I get the grades, it's a conditional offer," I reply, and Olivia smiles, rolling her eyes.
"Of course you'll get the grades, Jess, you're the smartest person I know," Olivia smiles, hugging me again. I smile, before we sit down at the table.
After school, I rush home to where my dad is waiting. As soon as I open the door, my dad wraps his arms around me.
"I'm so proud of you, Jessica," my dad tells me, and I smile, resting my chin on his shoulder.
"Good," I smile, before the doorbell rings. I raise an eyebrow, before I open the for to see Rachel at the door.
"I heard that you got a conditional offer into Oxford, congratulations!" Rachel grins, hugging me. Damn, I've never hugged so many people in my life.
"Thank you," I smile, wrapping my arms around her waist.
"I'm so proud of you. And what did I say, I knew they'd love you," Rachel tells me, smiling.
Once Rachel leaves, I end up lying in bed, exhausted. Today has been a long day, and right now all I can think of is how much I love sleep. Which is why, at five o'clock in the evening, I fall asleep.
