Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Waiting Game.

Jessica Washington

"So, are you nervous about meeting my dad in a few weeks?" River asks from where he is sat on my bed. It's Saturday evening, and I've spent the day with River, just talking about anything really. It's nice that we can just sit down and talk.

"Not one bit," I lie, since in reality, I've been dreading it since he asked me to go. I wasn't as nervous about it before River and I kissed, but now I'm more nervous. It feels like it matters more now that I make a good impression.

"I'm calling bullshit," River comments, and I roll my eyes, turning round to face him from where I'm stood by the shelves, as I'm looking for a film to watch.

"I'm never nervous," I lie, even though everyone and their mother knows that this is definitely a lie - I'm nervous more often than I'm not.

"Sure," River says disbelievingly.

"Why? Should I be nervous?" I ask, choosing a DVD from the shelf and putting it into the player.

"No, no, you shouldn't," River reassures me, although he sounds uncertain.

"I'm calling bullshit," I imitate his words from earlier. River chuckles, as I sit down beside him. River moves his arm back over my shoulder and pulls me over to him so I'm leaning into him.

"I don't know. I've introduced a girl to him before. She wasn't a girlfriend, but I was planning on asking her. It was in the old town I lived in, and we'd hooked up a few times, I guess. She wanted me to ask her out, so I planned on doing it eventually. I guess I put it off because I didn't really want to. Anyway, I invited her to visit my dad with me, which she obviously agreed to. Unfortunately, my dad judged her very quickly and it was very clear that he didn't approve. He made her feel so uncomfortable that she told me to go fuck myself and then she walked out, because my dad had been rude to her, like asking her personal questions and stuff," River explains, and I bite my lip nervously.

"Well, you've definitely calmed my nerves," I inform River chuckles, shaking his head.

"Well you did say that you weren't nervous," River tells me, rolling his eyes.

"Well I lied, a lot," I admit, and River chuckles.

"You'll be fine, Jessica, he'll love you," River assures me, before he kisses me. I roll my eyes in amusement, before kissing him back. River smiles slightly against my lips, before my door opens suddenly, surprising both of us. My stomach twists suddenly anxiously, as I have yet to tell my dad about River.

I look up and I'm surprised when I see Blake stood in the doorway. Well, I'm surprised for a second, but then I remember that Blake is staying the weekend.

"Sorry, your dad didn't mention that you had company,"  Blake apologises, and I smile, relieved that it is only Blake.

"Sorry, I forgot you were coming," I smile excitedly, standing up and running over to him, hugging him. Blake chuckles, hugging me back.

"River, right? Nice to see you again," Blake smiles at River, who smiles in return.

"Yeah, nice to see you," River replies, as I step back from Blake.

"I'll leave you to catch up, I'll speak to you later," River tells me, smiling. I'm about to question this and tell him that he is welcome to stay but before I can reply, he's climbs out the window and leaves. Blake watches in amazement, and I raise an eyebrow.
