Chapter Three: Clean Break.

Jessica Washington

Going into school for the second day can either be easier or harder. It's easier because you've already been there one day and you know exactly what to expect. On the other hand, it's harder, because after the whole day before, you're more tired for the second day. This is exactly what I'm experiencing now, as I tiredly walk into school the next day, like a zombie.

I walk to my locker, where Olivia is waiting. She's texting someone, but she switches off her phone when I walk over. I take out my books for English Literature from my locker, before turning to speak to Olivia.

"So, what's your new neighbour like?" Olivia asks, curiously, knowing that I was getting a new neighbour.

"Alright," I shrug, vaguely. I mean, I've only met River, or book boy, so I can't really say much for the rest of his family. I think he has a younger sister, I saw her out the window this morning when their mum was trying to get her ready for school. I remember River saying that he lived with his dad until now, where he has moved in with his mum. He never mentioned a sister.

"Have you seen any of them? Is it a family? A couple?" Olivia asks, as if this is the biggest news of the century.

"A family," I answer, giving her purposely short answers, knowing that it'll frustrate her. Olivia groans, and I laugh softly.

"Do they have a son?" Olivia asks, moving her eyebrows up and down in a creepy, suggestive way.

"Yes, they have a son," I reply, rolling my eyes at her question. Olivia grins, as she finally gets she answers she wants.

"How old is he?" Olivia asks, looking way more interested than she did before. Which is surprising, since she was already interested before this topic came up.

"Seventeen, in our year," I reply, as we reach my English Literature class. "Oh, what a shame, this is where I am for first period. I'll talk to you later," I tell her, sarcasm dripping from my lips.

"Don't worry, we'll continue this at lunch," Olivia grins, before bouncing away. I roll my eyes, before walking into the classroom. I sit down in the same seat as yesterday, before the lesson begins.

"Oh, sorry I'm late. I got lost," I hear a familiar voice say from the doorway, ten minutes into the lesson. Book boy.

"River Morgan, welcome back. Jessica Washington doesn't have a partner, why don't you go sit next to her? She's the girl in the back row-" Miss Ashworth starts to explain, before River interrupts.

"Don't worry, I know who she is," River interrupts, before walking over to sit beside me.

"Are you sure that's a good idea? She might fuck him on the desk, she doesn't even need to have been on a date with the guy, she'll take anything," Tyler says, loud enough for the whole class to hear. Most of the class laugh, and Miss Ashworth just frowns, waiting for the laughter to die down.

"I apologise for having low standards. Really, I do. That's why I dated you," I reply, rolling my eyes. The people who hear my comment laugh slightly, amused.

Miss Ashworth calms the class down after this, the laughter subsiding. River sits down beside me, raising an eyebrow at me.
