Chapter Thirty-Seven: Leaving It Behind.

River Morgan

It's just over a week after Olivia's birthday party, and it's a Tuesday. School has just finished, and I'm going to work with Jess. It's her last shift there, where she is training the new employee who is taking over Jess's job. I decided to go with her because I have a lot of homework to do so I might as well do it there so I can talk to Jess while I'm there.

"How has your day been?" Jess asks, as we sit down on the bus.

"Good, I got set a lot of homework, though. How about you?" I reply, and Jess nods.

"Alright, I guess. Long," Jess replies, and I laugh, rolling my eyes. I move my arm around the back of her chair, and Jess blushes slightly when I do this, making me smile. She looks so beautiful.

We fall into a comfortable silence, before we arrive at Jess's work, Baker's Books. We get off the bus and walk into the bookstore, where Jess's boss, Sarah, is waiting with a boy who is around my age.

"Jessica, thank you so much for doing this. This is Alex, the boy that you'll be training today. It shouldn't take long, so you can leave once you have finished. Make sure you come and say goodbye before you go," Sarah Baker tells Jess, smiling brightly.

"Will do," Jess smiles, before Sarah heads into the back room. I sit down at a table to start my homework, while Jess shows Alex what to do. jess explains quickly how everything works to Alex quickly, before they wait for a customer in order to make sure that Alex has taken everything in.

Jess asks Alex a few questions about himself while they're waiting. Jess finds out that he's nineteen years old from London, and he used to work in a cafe in London before he moved down here to go to university to study Media.

Then a customer comes in, and Jess watches as Alex serves the customer. Alex manages to do it by himself, and Jess smiles, congratulating Alex, before she is able to go, as he has been fully trained. She has left him a list of instructions which tell him exactly what to do, before she walks into the back room to say goodbye to Sarah.

When Jess walks out the back room, she is holding a bouquet of white roses and two wrapped up boxes. Her eyes are red as if she has been crying, but Sarah is crying more.

"Goodbye Jess, come and visit soon," Sarah smiles at Jess, who smiles, hugging her tightly.

"I will," Jess promises, returning Sarah's hug before stepping back.

"And good luck," Sarah tells Jess, who smiles.

"Thanks, same for you," Jess replies, before she walks over to me.

"Are you ready to go?" Jess questions, and I nod, packing up my things and following her out of the building.

"Are you alright?" I ask, and Jess nods, smiling.

"Yeah. I've been there for a while, that's all, it feels strange to be leaving it behind," Jess admits, as I take her hand in mine.

"I can imagine," I reply, understandingly. It's like leaving a part of yourself behind so you can move onto new things, hopefully better things.

We walk to the bus stop and wait for the bus to arrive, before we start heading back to our homes. When we arrive, I say goodbye to Jess, before heading inside.

"River, can I talk to you?" I hear my mum call, and I sigh, before walking into the living room, where my mum is sat on the sofa. She indicates for me to sit down next to her, so I reluctantly take the seat beside her, knowing that this means that it is a relatively serious issue.

"What is it?" I ask, curiously.,

"Well, I've been trying to talk to you for a while now. It's about Jessica," my mum informs me, and I frown, confused. It must be about when she saw us kissing after Olivia's birthday party. But what I don't know what she is going to say about it. I mean, she loves Jess like her own daughter, so it won't be because she doesn't like her, so what else has she got to say?

"What about her?" I ask, confused.

"It's just that she's a lovely girl, we both know that. She's been through a lot, River, and you need to make sure you're careful. No offence, kid, but you've never really treated girls very well in the past. I just want you to know that I'm gong to be extremely disappointed if you treat Jess the same way. She has been through a lot, and I don't want you adding to her list of problems," my mum tells me, and I nod, biting my lip. I know that what she is saying is true, but Jess is different.

"I know, mum, don't worry," I reassure her, rolling my eyes slightly at her.

"I wish you would have told me about you two, River," my mum informs me, and I raise an eyebrow.

"Mum, it hasn't being going on for long. We haven't really talked about it, yet. Don't worry, we're taking it slow," I assure her, and my mum nods.

"Okay, just make sure that it is what she wants, too. Don't force her into anything. And you'll have to tell her about your dad," my mum continues, and I roll my eyes. It's nice to see what my mum really thinks about me, she doesn't trust me not to hurt Jess at all.

"I have, she agreed to come with me and see him in March," I inform her, which surprises her.

"Really? Have you told her what he's like?" my mum asks, and I nod.

"Bits and pieces," I shrug, and Rachel nods.

"Good. Well I just wanted to make sure that you weren't messing her around," my mum tells me, and I roll my eyes.

"Well, you can sleep peacefully now knowing that I'm serious about it," I assure her, before I stand up and walk away.

Sorry this chapter was so short, I struggle to write in River's POV. If you did (somehow) like it, it would mean a lot if you gave it a vote or a comment, and thank you for reading! Have a good week!:)
