Chapter Four: Downton Abbey.

Jessica Washington

When I arrive home, I see that both my parents are already dressed up smartly in anticipation of the arrival of our new neighbours.

"Good, you're here. They're arriving in around half an hour, hurry up," my mum tells me, looking worried.

"Don't worry, I'm on it like a car bonnet," I reply, before hopping up the stairs to my bedroom. Then I start to rummage through my wardrobe to find something nice to wear. I eventually find a nice top and a skirt. The top is a crop top, and it's white and lacy, with off the shoulder sleeves. The skirt is a plain black skater skirt, which is worn as a high-waisted skirt, in an attempt to not show too much skin. This skirt comes down to just below mid-thigh. I wear black heels as well to match. I brush my hair, leaving it loose down my back. Finally, I put on a little makeup, just to hide the dark circles under my eyes, and to actually show that I have eyelashes.

Once I'm ready, I bounce down the stairs to the living room, where my parents are sat. My mum looks like me, I guess. She has the same hair and eyes as me, and her face is the same shape. The only thing appearance wise that I got from my dad is his nose, and my dad's nose is very similar to my mum's. Other from that, I might as well be a clone of my mum.

"That's them," my dad says, when the doorbell rings. My mum stands up to go greet them, while my dad starts to set out the table quickly.

"Can you go and take the dinner out the oven?" my dad asks me, and I nod, heading into the kitchen. I take the food out of the oven while I hear River and his family settling down in the dining room. I serve the food onto each plate, before my mum enters the kitchen and helps me take it into the dining room. I place a plate in front of each person, before sitting down in the only empty seat. This seat is in between River's sister and my mum, and opposite River.

"My name is Rachel, nice to meet you. This is my son, River, and my daughter, Ashley," River's mum, Rachel, smiles at me. Rachel, River and Ashley all look quite similar, but by the looks of it, both River and Ashley must look like both their parents, unlike me, who predominantly looks like my mum. Rachel has long, dirty blonde hair, with blue eyes and pale skin. River and Ashley both have the same coloured hair as her, but they both have green eyes, which must be similar to their dad. River is slightly more tanned than his mum, as is Ashley, so they must get that from their dad, as well.

"Hi, nice to meet you too. I'm Jessica," I reply, smiling politely. Rachel smiles in return, before she starts to speak to my parents.

"Jessica Washington, I must say that you are looking rather pretty tonight," River says, and I roll my eyes, taking a mouthful of my food.

"You sound like you're on Downton Abbey or something," I inform him, ignoring the heat I feel in my cheeks at the compliment. I can't take compliments, I've never been able to. I just freeze up, so now I just ignore them. Well, I try to ignore them.

"I'm not a romantic, but even I concede that the heart does not exist solely for the purpose to pump blood," River quotes from Downton Abbey, in what would be a stereotypical British accent. I roll my eyes, smiling slightly to try and stop myself from laughing at the poor impression.

"Your impression could use a little work," I inform him, giving him constructive criticism.

"How so?" River asks, raising an eyebrow.
