- *Just my opinion!*
Watt pad is 40% adults and 60% teens/young adults. So, please don't post a note saying, "Don't read This scene if your under 18! It's only for adults!" If you do this, I'm going to laugh at you because the majority of your readers are probably like fifteen. And, post teens will roll their eyes [as they should] at the note and read the chapter.
Why are their EXTREMELY explicit scenes in stories marked teen fiction? Okay, so let me get this straight, you mark your story in the teen fiction and then you tell teens NOT to read it?! If you look at the YA section, they are plenty of novels that have some sex scenes and racy scenes. But, those novels can be sexy and push the limits without being too racy. So, I'm not saying you can't write a sex scene if you write for teens. I'm saying that be aware of the fact fourteen year olds are reading your story!
No publisher Or Literary agent will accept a Y/A Romance with Adult scenes. It's not going to happen. It's likely they'll laugh before they burn your manuscript. Yes, welcome to the real world. Sometimes, being a writer really sucks.
Now, if you want to write those types of scenes, turn to Adult Romance and target a more mature audience. If you are writing extremely explicit scenes that verge on being erotica then I think you'd be better off finding a different site that caters to that! If you want to write slightly more racy scenes,(but not explicit) then label it adult and post it on here.
Y/A Romance focuses more on the development of the characters; The first kiss, the first date.. ect. Adult Romance is sometimes mistaken for erotica because it's filled with sex. The Majority of Adult Romance focuses more on sexual content than the actual plot. When you pick up a book where the characters are half naked on the cover, are you really looking to read an outstanding novel? I think not.
Does that mean that all Adult Writers follow this forumla? Absolutely not! Nora Roberts writes adult romance and she is one of the most talented writers I have ever encountered. They are expections to the Adult Romance genre.
But, you should study each genre because you want to target the "right" audience. If you write a stand out novel in the Adult Romance genre, that is unlike the other books, then it might increase your fan base!
Learn who your audience is. Are you writing for teens or adults?
And do you want your novel to be more focused on the actual story or just random sex scenes? I have one restricted scene on my own story, but I just think that too many sex scenes weigh down a story. And the fact that the ADULT Romance section is sadly 90% about sex has, in my opinion, ruined the genre. I'd like to see new Adult Romance writers rebuild the genre by writing stunning novels that focus more on the plot and the suspense of a novel! One day, the romance section will make a come back and it will turn into something that we all can be proud of! For now, I'm sticking with Y/A Romance!
