Chapter- What chapter is this?! *Serious writers*

I hear that, "Some of the best writers had hard lives and devastating childhoods. Because of the struggles they have faced in their own lives, they are able to write compelling novels. You should only write novels that are based on your real life! You don't want to "fake" a scene."

It is true the some of the greatest writers of all time have had very dark childhoods and maybe that is why they are propelled to write dark stories. Hemingway had a dark childhood and wrote inspiring novels that would be deemed as literary gold.  Even after his novels had gained attention, it was enough to keep him happy. He tried to commit suicide three times and was successful the third time. In some ways, he was disturbed individuals but that made him a great writer. His struggles taught him a lot about life and his childhood shaped him as a person. Maybe, he felt a sense of peace when he sat down to write a chapter or maybe he had just oppressed his feelings for too long.

You will draw inspiration from your real life.  It's likely that some of your characters will be a reflection of you. Some characters will be 100% fictional! Some characters will have the same aspirations, religious beliefs (or non-religious beliefs), and desires that you do. You base some events on your real life but other events will be 100% based on your imagination.

But here's the real question: Should you write only novels based on your real life?  I don't think you should only write novels based on a real event. If writers are supposed to only talk about their real life, then I'm in trouble.  My real life would bore you to tears!  Imagination can be a powerful tool. And our imagination is always there. No it doesn't die off when we turn into adults.

If you have some strenuous life struggles, then use it to your advantage and you'll be a better writer for.    Even if you have a lead a boring, mundane life, you will draw inspirations from your life.

It doesn't matter what side you on, you have to ask yourself these to questions:

1) What motivates you to write? Why do you write?

2) What characters/ events are based on your real life?

I don't think a writer can 'fake' a scene. As long as you write about what you want to write about! Don't write about what you think appeals to other people because that might backfire on you.

My answers: *Personal! Skip, if you don't want to know!*

1) Comments, books, and inspiration songs motivate me to write. Positive comments also push me to write! Oh and I like listening to the character voices in my head. Sometimes, a scene playing and playing in my head and it won't stop unless I write it down. Does that make me crazy?

2) Very little of my novels are based on my 'real life.' I've never had two, sexy brothers fall for me. But if your sexy (and male) and have a sexy older, brother.......

Sage and I have similar qualities. We only 2% similar.

1) We are both have our insecurities and are naive.  2) We both have lived a somewhat sheltered life, yet, my family isn't nearly as rich as her family!  3) We both want/crave an escape from reality. So we seek out a different reality!

The similarities end there.  The actual novel is 100% fictional.  I told you, I spent too much time day dreaming, instead of living in reality!
