Jade's POV
"I still can't believe you made her invite her boyfriend over." Harley laughed.
"He isn't my boyfriend!" Ella huffed, her cheeks turning red.
She grinned. "Of course not."
They were on the other side of the counter, watching me make dinner. Holly was watching a movie with Carolyn in the basement, so it was just the three of us. I thought it'd be better if it was just Harley and I at the table with Ella and her guy friend.
"What's this boy's name again?" I asked.
"Jace." She replied. "Please, be nice to him. He's scared to death to come over."
I chuckled. "We won't bite... much."
"Jade!" Harley scolded, giving me that motherly stare. "Don't worry, Honey. I'll make sure your dad behaves."
"Thanks." Ella shyly replied, then the doorbell rang. She went to get it, while Harley kept giving me that look.
"What?!" I questioned, as if I didn't know.
"Be good." She playfully warned as she turned her attention towards our guest.
They always say girls end up dating guys like their father. Jace looked just like I did when I was that age. Oh, that's just great. He had choppy black hair, a lip piercing, and crystal clear green eyes. Harley always says, the clearer someone's eyes are, the purer their soul.
"Um, Jace, this is my dad, and my stepmom." Ella muttered.
Jace weakly smiled, staying close to Ella. He was shy, just like I used to be.
"It's nice to meet you!" Harley beamed. "I haven't had a chance to hear much about you. We were out of town for a while, and just got back."
"Th-thanks." He murmured, nervously laughing. "There isn't much to me."
"I'll be the judge of that. Now, come on and join us! Jade just finished making dinner!" She warmly said, as she head to the table.
Ella's POV
Jace was scared to death of my parents! I felt horrible, 'cause I didn't exactly give him a forewarning as to what he was getting into. I'm sure he really wasn't expecting my parents to be so young, or in a famous band.
I gently tugged him along. "C'mon."
He leaned into me and whispered, "You dad isn't the kind that would poison me, right? That almost happened once."
I stared at him strangely. "Seriously? And no, my parents would never... At least I don't think... I'm not helping, huh?"
"No, you're fine." He replied, forcing a smile.
I returned the smile, as we sat down at the table, across from my parents. My dad made one of my favorites; Meatballs and spaghetti! It might sound basic, but my dad is a really good cook!
"So, Jace, tell us about yourself." My mom asked, in the typical mom tone.
He nervously blushed, then attempted to shrug. "What'd you wanna know?"
"Well, let's see... Do you have any siblings?"
"Uh, yeah." Jace replied. "I'm kind of the baby. My oldest brother is in the army, and my older sister is a Junior. I'm also the youngest of my cousins."
My dad laughed. "They say opposites attract. Ella here is the oldest of all the kids in the family!"
"B-but my dad's way younger sister and I grew up together, so she's like my sister." I added. "My dad raised his sister."
Jace shyly looked down, mumbling, "Yeah, my brother pretty much raised me. I really respect anyone willing to make that sacrifice."
"Thank you, but it's more of a labor of love than a sacrifice." Dad softly responded. "Now, on a lighter note, do you go to Ella's school?"
"N-no." He painfully admitted. "My parents aren't successful like you guys, and I'm not smart like Ella."
They both got these solum, sympathetic looks. My parents exchanged glances, then turned their attention to Jace.
"Jace, we never were either." My mom said. "I lived in the housing projects up until I was sixteen. Then CPS put me in a good home. Jade's mom passed away when he was your age. He ended up dropping out of high school to work for his family, but he took night classes and he still graduated. We both came from terrible homes, and look at us now! I guess what I'm saying is, have faith."
He looked up through his messy bangs, then smiled. "Thank you."
