Imagine:

"Hi darling, it's Karen... it's Shawn. H-he's been admitted to hospital."

My face drops from a smile into a distorted 'O' shape. Karen says some other things but I zone out. I clench my hand tight around the sink so tight that my knuckles start to become prominent, almost as if the bones will pop through the skin.

"Hello? Y/n, darling?"

I take several gulps of air before I answer. "I'm still here," I manage to whisper, but my voice is broken and choked as the tears start to well up in my eyes.

"Get ready hun, I'm coming to pick you up. We're all going together."

I nod my head silently even though she can't see me. I drop my phone to the floor and wince as it crashes to the floor and I swear my heart smashed into a million pieces. I ball my eyes out and drag myself from the bathroom to my bedroom and shrug on one of Shawn's hoodie over my satin dress. He was supposed to pick me up to go out for our date... but he never made it. I dry my eyes with some tissue and don't bother fixing my face because I just want to be out of the house and see Shawn.

I hear a car pull up outside and text Mum saying I'm with Aaliyah. How could I say Shawn? I don't even know if he's going to be alright. I get in the back and sit beside Aaliyah, her sweet face covered in tears. I hug her tight and kiss her head.

"Shhhhh," I say into her ear. It's going to be fine Aaliyah. Shawn's the strongest person I know. He will be okay."

Manuel seems unusually quiet, which is unlike his happy character I always see, so I can tell that the news has got to him. "Shawn has been in a car accident, I think Karen told you that. He left to pick you up Y/n, but he never made it. He went to the hospital instead."

I open my mouth to say something, but then I shut it. Nothing seems to make sense. How do I phrase the words? We all know he's probably injured. "How... how is he? Is Shawn badly hurt? Or is he-"

My eyes stay fixed on the road ahead. We pass a street that has the road taped off, with police cars and investigators lining the area. The cars were still there. Shawn's Jeep is overturned and completely crushed as it sits restlessly on the pavement. The other vehicle was a mini lorry, it's front bashed in but it seems perfectly fine. My mind suddenly fills with different images of the Jeep somersaulting on the road and of Shawn getting hurt and Shawn dying and we're not there to help him-

"Y/n?"

I look up and Aaliyah's staring at me. I bury my face in my hands and cry quietly as she hugs me this time. "Don't, it'll be fine, just like you said. It might look bad, but Dad said Shawn's okay. He's hurt his head really badly and broken his leg... but it will be fine. At least he's still here."

We arrive at the hospital and Karen asks for the room Shawn is in. As soon as she mentions his name, the nurse's smile drops to a serious face, but she tries to hide it. She leads the way to a room at the end of the corridor, and we enter the room. There's no one else in the room apart from one person who I barely recognise. It's Shawn.

I run over to him with Aaliyah to see the damage from the accident myself. His eyes are closed but he seems to be dreaming of pain as his eyebrows are furrowed and his lips slightly parted. His head has been cleaned from all the blood, although there's still traces of it along his temple. There's a giant plaster on the corner of his forehead and several stitches on the other side. I look over his arms and they're covered in grazes and dried blood from where the broken glass must have cut him badly. His long legs are bare as they stripped him down to some shorts, where his left leg has been placed in a temporary cast.

I walk closer to him and sit down on a chair, Karen, Manuel and Aaliyah at the other side of Shawn.

We're here now Shawn," I whisper. I see his body shaking slightly, and I touch his skin. It feels cold, which is odd. I take his hand carefully in mine and bring my face close to it. His knuckles are also grazed and bloodied. I kiss the back of Shawn's hand carefully, not wanting to inflict any pain on him. He looks so tired and restless. "Look, Shawn. You were coming to pick me up right? For our date? Well I'm here now. I came to you instead, with Aaliyah and Karen and Manuel."

I sigh as I try my best to stay strong for him. "I'm even wearing the silver dress you picked out. Just please answer Shawn. Please."

A machine in the corner starts to beep suddenly, but my hopes of seeing this as a good sign soon vanish as a doctor and nurse rush into the room and usher us all out. Then all of a sudden, the machine stops beeping, and I'm pretty sure my heart stopped beating too.
