Now, after a long and painful summer, the four boys were once again in their dorm room. Though they weren't messing around like every year before. James tried, and he tried hard, but Sirius wouldn't join his tricks and jokes. Peter sat on his bed with a thoughtful look in his blue eyes, this time his stomach was so full he wasn't even capable to eat any longer. And Remus, he sat on the floor in front of the big window next to his bed, breathing in the chilly air of the early autumn night. The sky was black, starless. It didn't even look like the sky, it was more like a smooth layer of something deep and dark. Like an oil puddle.
And it was quiet. There were no birds, no crickets, not even the wind. Nothing was moving, not even the surface of the Black Lake. It was like a mirror, reflecting the inky black sky. Like a black hole in the ground.
"Remus..."
Sirius' fraigle, silent and gentle voice broke the silence that had finally landed on top of the room, as James had grown tired of suggesting pranks nobody wanted to perform.
"Yes?"
Remus turned his head to see the boy, sitting on his crossed legs in the darkest corner of the room.
"I...I need to talk to you. Alone."
He managed to whisper, so quietly that Remus could barely hear, and got up to stand. The tall boy got up too, now a little anxious about the nature of the thing Sirius was about to tell him. And they walked out of the dorm, leaving Peter and James staring after them in confusion.

The hallway between the dormatories was dark and narrow, Remus could hear Sirius' breath as they walked so close to each other. And when Remus really concentrated, he could even hear the boy's heartbeat. It was uneven, jumpy and fast.
Sirius walked faster. Remus didn't have to, as his legs were so long he could just stride alongside the shorter boy without much effort. And that, for some unknown reason seemed to annoy Sirius. And just before they reached the stairs that lead to the common room, he stopped.
And he started to cry.
No matter how hard Sirius tried to push those tears back, no matter how hard he bit his lip and how rabidly he blinked, he couldn't help the tears from falling. He was angry at himself for letting Remus see.
And the tall boy in his oversized brown sweater, he looked kind. And he laid his hands on the boy's shaking shoulders, pulling this closer, wrapping his long arms around his body.
They stood there, on top of the staircase in the dark, Sirius' ear resting on Remus' chest. They felt so broken, both of them, but at the same time so warm and safe.
"You can tell me, you know..."
Remus whispered softly after some time, stroking the shorter boy's dark hair with his tall fingers.
"You can tell me anything."
The sobbing ended, and for a short moment it was again completely silent.
"I think you already know..."
Sirius said, voice calm and a little shaky. Remus just waited.
Yes, he knew it was Orion whose fist had made those bruises. He knew things were shit at home. But the thing he didn't exactly know was why. Why would Orion all of a sudden start beating his son? He had done it before, yes, but he always had some shitty reason. Reason like Sirius being a Gryffindor. Though they weren't reasons, not really. More like excuses.

"I'm gay."
