They were fifteen minutes late, and being seen by a teacher at that time would cause some light trouble. Well, Sirius was more than used to such trouble, and Remus was more than used to getting Sirius out of it.
The hallways were quite dark, and though there was a prefect patch glimmering on Remus' uniform collar, he knew it wouldn't be enough to save them from detention. Sirius was still stressed, frightened and most of all furious about his father, about the conversation they had paused in the library, and if the angry face of professor McGonagall would be added to the mix, it was possible that he would throw a punch. Not at Remus or Minnie, obivously, but at the stone wall or the first annoying Ravenclaw, sassy Slytherin or cocky Gryffindor (apart from James, because Sirius wound NEVER hit James). He would really have enjoyed slapping Lucius Malfoy across his smug face, doing so would have made him feel loads better.
But instead of trying to find that blonde cock, he waked in that heavy silence next to Remus towards the Gryffindor tower. They were both so silent, that even their steps made no sound against the stone floor. They needed to listen, because if Filch was creeping somewhere across their way there'd be no way they could run.
Of course Sirius could pull that trick again, the one he had learned last year. The one that made Remus furious. He could transform into his animagus form, avoiding the trouble and leaving Remus to explain how he was just so deep in studying potions that he didn't notice how time flew by, what usually worked on Minnie giving him a free pass. But all those times, Remus ended up calling Surius a spineless dipshit, and James would laugh his ass off.
It was cold in the castle at night. Remus was still in his school uniform for some reason, the gray knitted jumper with a red lion patch didn't quite bring justice to the warm color of his eyes. Brown was what suited the tall boy the best, but in Sirius' opinion he would look gorgeous even dressed up in a garbage bag.

They made it to the fat lady without being seen, forgetting that she had a habit of telling students off to Dumbledore...
"Unbelievable! You again!"
She gasped, not at all surprised about seeing Sirius' face, asking for a pass at after hours.
"Moony here had to study..."
He muttered, voice tired and still quite tense.
"MoonEy, Sirius."
The tall boy groaned from behind his teeth, poking Sirius with his elbow. He was okay with the nickname given to him by James on their first year, but they had made a deal not to speak of it outside of their own gang. Just to avoid exposure, because if people at Hogwarts apart from madam Pomfrey and Dumbledore knew that he was a werewolf, his reputation would be ruined. In fact, he could even get expelled.
"Sorry."
Sirius whispered, quickly glancing back at the tall boy but keeping his focus on the painting.
"You know, I was expecting to see you with that Potter boy, carrying fireworks towards Slytherin common room. This is actually quite a pleasant surprise. You aren't even half an hour late."
The lady spoke, ignoring the eyerolls of Sirius and fustarated gasps of Remus. And finally, after some minutes of babbling on about the rascal youths of modern days and how in her times behavior as such would be horribly punishable, she let the two in.
Though they only got to take about four steps, as the confused and a bit sad James blocked their way. He had been sitting on the common room sofa for about an hour, waiting for his friends to return from where ever they had been, waiting for an explanation.
James was afraid that he had done something wrong, crossed a line with his jokes maybe? He thought that Sirius was ignoring him on purpose, what of course wasn't the case. So now, as he looked deep into his best friend's eyes without seeing the usual happy spark, only a stormy and cold open sea, he saw it. He saw the pain, for the first time he actually did. He had known about it's existence ever since the train trip, but it felt somehow real just then.

"Where were you?"
He asked quietly.
