It was quiet in the train as Sirius rested his head on Remus' thighs, the tall boy ran his fingers trough his boyfriend's dark hair. Trips to London were always much more restrained than trips to Hogwarts, more calm and less hysterical. People were silently happy, in Christmas spirit.
Snowflakes hit against the frosty windows as the train speeded trough the highlands, afternoon sun already setting. The gentle clatter of the rails filled the space, along with the silent rustle of gingerbread crumbling in Peter's mouth. James felt sad.
He was excited to return home, to see his parents and spend time with them. He just wanted to take Sirius with him, what wasn't a functionin option. He was scared that once the long haired boy returned to Grimmauld Place, he'd never return. As the train stopped in King's Cross station a couple of hours later, Remus grabbed Sirius by the sleeve as James and Peter left the compartment. There were tears in his eyes as he gazed into the shorter boy's gray eyes and the still surface of a sea he could still barely see in them.
"Play it safe... please play it safe out there."
He whispered as he pulled Sirius' petrified and cold body against his warm chest. It had stopped snowing, the sky outside was black.
"He can say things to hurt you, but you must learn not to listen..."
"But they aren't just words, Rem. They never were just words."
Sirius' voice was barely audible, it muffled against his boyfriend's jacket. He sounded weak, tired and scared. Remus' heart was aching so terribly he wanted so scream. He wanted to grab Sirius and run, never let the boy go from his arms. But he had to. The train was almost empty and would head back to Hogwarts in a few minutes, they had to get off.
"Just... please stay strong."
The tall boy's tears fell on Sirius' hair, his lips felt warm against his forehead.
"You too."
Sirius whispered. There'd be one full moon that he wouldn't be present to witness with him. And though the furry little problem wasn't quite as important at that very moment as Sirius' fucked up home life, the dark haired boy was worried. Last full moon Remus got out of the shacles and broke his wrists. Next time he might not be as lucky.
"We need to go."
Sirius' voice was weak. It was trembling, breaking on his lips.
"Yeah..."
Remus' lips pressed softly against his forehead once more. It wasn't quite a kiss, more like a gentle tap. But it felt good. Safe and warm, for a little while. As Sirius stood outside, in a little group of students that had taken longer to exit the train, the first thing he saw was Regulus. Standing there, quietly next to the train in a spot where their mothers eyes couldn't yet get to them. Waiting.
"Reg?"
Sirius' miserable voice sounded surprised.
"Hi. I need to talk to you about something before we go find mother."
The thirteen year old sounded way too mature as he stood there, green tie neatly hanging in his neck. The Slytherin crest on his uniform glimmered in the station lights. Remus had gotten out from a different train door so Walburga wouldn't lose her shit if she saw his son get out with that disgrace.
"What is it?"
Sirius was too scared to be witty and too tired to ask extra questions. So he just stared at the dirty snow on his feet, knowing that it would melt soon as the weather in London never staid nice for very long. Regulus sighed.
"I still don't know what it is that you've done wrong... but knowing father, I bet it's not as bad as he makes it seem. I also know he knows about the fight, and will lose his shit when he sees you in half an hour-"
"Reg, this is not helping!"
Sirius roared at his little brother as the train whistled behind them. The masses of students and parents had started to move towards the pilar of platform 9, and the brothers were losing their disguise from their mother's observation.
"Just listen! What I mean to say, is that I know you haven't done anything wrong, and even if you have I know it's nothing unforgivable. So... I want you to know that I most definetly don't agree with father, and to me you are... you are my brother. And I'm not ashamed of you."
Regulus sounded so fierce, so determined and brave.
"Regulus!! Regulus!"
Walburga's emotionless and mean, a little croaking but still in a way feminine call echoed trough the platform. Goosebumps of despise and fear rose on Sirius' skin. His mother was too ashamed of him to even call his name in public.
Sirius flashed a tired, fading smile to his little brother, tightened his grip on his trunk and started to walk towards the voice. Regulus followed, anger silently growing in his stomach.
Life was unfair.
