I was so tired, I could barely walk down the street. Working a ten hour shift in the kitchen of a fast food place wasn't really my idea of a "great job" but it paid the bills. I stumbled over a crack in the sidewalk and mentally shook myself. WAKE UP. Sleep would come as soon as my head hit the pillow.
People moved around me, busily going about their business, everyone rushing home to dinner. I thought it was a little sad that you could live in a city for ten years and not know anyone. I worked long hours a lot, so I understood how people got "busy". I was busy myself, with work and school. Ugh. I still had research to do for that paper on Monday. I stopped and looked around. Hmm, the library was two streets back. I could take a short cut down the alley and be there in two minutes.Just as I stepped into the darkness, someone grabbed me by the jacket and pulled me behind the dumpster. My back was slammed against the brick wall, as he said, "Hold still, Son."
"Take what you want," I said quickly and held up my hands. I had been mugged before. I knew what he wanted. "Here," I dropped my bookbag and reached for my wallet.
He actually laughed at me, "What you have for me is far more valuable than a scrap of money."
His red eyes cut into my blue ones as he held me against the building. My breath was strangled, my words a low whisper, "What do you want?"
"Frightened?" he smiled and his fangs touched his dark, bottom lip.
"No," I stared at his full lips and fangs, "You're a vampire!" I gasped in a whisper.
"Yes," he laughed again and his grip on me loosened.
"Will you just kill me or will you turn me?" I smiled back at him.
"I will admit I am intrigued," he took a step back.
I straightened my clothes and frowned at him, "But you won't."
He slowly shook his head, "Go home, boy." He turned away from me to walk down the alley.
"Wait a minute," I took his elbow and he stopped to look over his shoulder at me. "Where are you going?" I pulled his arm back.
His dark, gray eyes penetrated me and his voice was a warning, "Release me."
"I won't," I looked from my hand to his eyes, "Why won't you bite me?"
"Release. My. Arm," he said slow and deliberately.
I looked down at my hand again and let go of him.
"Sorry," I mumbled."What is your name, Son?"
"Marcus," I shrugged. I looked up into his eyes, "Why won't you change me?"
"And where does this need you have to become a vampire come from?" he folded his arms over his chest and looked down his nose at me. "I would think being a human would be most desirable," he smiled.
"Not really," I shrugged, "And I don't have a NEED to become a vampire. I was just curious," I said and turned to leave.
With speed faster than my human eyes could follow, he shoved me against the building and took a handful of my hair; pulling my head back, his fangs sank into my neck. His fangs didn't hurt or rip at my skin. They seemed to glide in so effortlessly that I felt only a warming sensation that went down my neck and radiated through my body. My eyes grew heavy and my body sank into his arms a little. I opened my mouth to speak, but only a tiny gurgle came out. My eyes closed and I was falling. I rested against his hard body and I could feel him easily move all of my weight to one arm. "Here now," he instructed, "Don't close your eyes." He held the back of my head in his hand, "Stay with me. You must drink."
His voice was soft and low. I found myself drawn to that voice and longing for that voice to cover me. I wanted him to protect me in a way that my poor mother never could. I wanted the love that I could hear in that voice. "Come on, Son," he laughed and my lips found the wound he had opened on his chest for me. And there was the love that I had always wanted. Rich and warm, it flooded my mouth. It penetrated my cold heart and went into small corners of my body that I didn't know were cold. Following the warmth was a sensation of power. It electrified my senses and opened synapses in the dark places of my brain. I had always longed for love, but this...this was unbridled power! With this power, I could conquer the world!
"You must stop," he panted. The desperation in his voice made me realize what I was doing and I released him suddenly. He stumbled back a step, holding his shoulder in his hand and breathing heavily.
"Are you okay?" I panted, wiping the blood from my lips.
He nodded, "Fine." He looked at me and shook his head, "I have never had a Youngling do that before."
"What?" I frowned. He only stared at me, panting. "What?" I asked angrily.
"You almost killed me!" he gasped, then whispered, almost to himself, "What have I done?"
