If she could have, Macrae would have spent the whole day at the water with her strange new friend. As it was, her brothers wouldn't let her out of the house. She spent the whole day doing the work that the boys said was too "delicate" for them to do.
Macrae sewed until her fingers were numb, baked a month's worth of bread, and cooked a stew that could last the rest of the week. By the time all her chores were done, the sun had set, risen, and set again, and even Macrae knew how dangerous the ocean could be in the dark. She paced and pouted more than slept that night.
The night was cold. Oh, how she wished she hadn't left her shawl at the shore!
