Solemn, Macrae walked through the forest. It had become a weekly ritual for her to go down to the beach. She brought a loaf of bread and strawberries, if she could. She'd eat half, and pitch the other half into the sea. She knew Elspeth was much too far to ever get the food, but it was a comfort, an apology.
Some days, Macrae would hear a splash offshore. Some Days, she could trick herself to think it was a Selkie in the waves. Once, she even pretended it was Elspeth coming back. "I love you," she would whisper to the waves.
Macrae would stand on the shore in the blind, foolish hope that Elspeth would forgive her.
