Macrae may have asked too many questions. The retired sailor was starting to catch on. He asked her today if she still lived alone, and she had answered "sometimes".
Macrae didn't fear the sailor. He was too old and kindly to get Elspeth's cloak from where it was, even if he wanted to.
Macrae did fear the other men in the village, those who the sailor often talked to. She feared their constant attempts at courting her might extend to every woman they met. They were aggressive enough to her, a woman who could say no. What might they do to one who couldn't?
Elspeth was a secret that Macrae intended to keep, for both their sakes. She had to be careful.
