Elspeth remained bitter and angry for all those same years.
She was furious that Mother had made her leave. She was furious at the stupid curse that meant she could not go back. She was furious no one had told her about the curse before. She was furious that no one was sympathetic to her plight. Not one person tried to help her. They all told her she should be glad she got away before she was trapped.
"As if getting away was impossible!" she screamed at the only one who would listen. "As if she would even try to keep me! They only think the worst of the Cloakless!"
"They have played with fire," the Elder would remind her. "And they have been burned."
"I played with fire," Elspeth spat. "We played feluleikur."
