Elspeth's vision did not return to her fully until she had been sitting in Macrae's home for an hour. She saw her cloak right next to Macrae's, on the hanger by the door. Her heart shriveled.
"I have to go." Her voice returned next.
"I understand. Take it." Macrae paused, and could not seem to find her voice again. Elspeth reached across the table she had slept on so many time, and grabbed Macrae's hand. "I'm so sorry."
Elspeth wished she could just say, 'I forgive you', but it was not that easy; it was not that simple.
"Goodbye, Macrae."
"Goodbye, Elspeth."
