Elspeth swam until her body screamed to stop. She managed to crawl her way on to a piece of land much to small to be called an island. She curled into a ball, unwilling to remove her cloak even to sleep. If she could only cry in this body!
Elspeth fell asleep easily, but found that staying asleep was not nearly so simple. Every few hours, she was shaken awake by nightmares that faded as soon as her eyes opened. After a few seconds of blinking at the rising sun, even the memories of the nightmare faded.
Eventually, the selkie gave up on sleep, and just sat and watched the waves, her cloak shifting in the wind.
