When it had been three months, Macrae snuck as much bread as she dared from the bakery, ready to go to the shore.
Half-way to the shore, Macrae had a crushing realization. Even if Elspeth was there, she would have to leave again. And then it would be seven long, empty years until they meet again. Macrae found that she suddenly couldn't move.
Did she even dare to see Elspeth again? Would it be better to just crush her heart, to leave now?
No, Macrae told herself firmly. No, I should see her. So, she moved forward again.
