"I want to believe I'm wrong," Elspeth confessed. "I love her, and I want to forgive her."
Her mother stayed silent, heavy with the truth that her daughter could no longer hide from her. The Elder took a deep breath to steady herself. She looked as if wanted to say something, if only she could find the words.
Mother spoke first. "Then do."
Elspeth wiped her own wet cheeks, speechless. "What?" she said in a whisper.
"Forgive her," Mother repeated. "After everything, one mistake ruins everything? Fjársjóður, you hide your cloak in the same place every day for three years. Do you not think she knew for longer? Do you not think it a strange coincidence she grabbed it in a time of your need? Did she not give it back?" The Elder nodded in agreement.
Elspeth forgot how to speak. Her Mother, defending a Cloakless, agreeing with the Elder?
