Elspeth will never forget the first time she was left alone. Mother had ventured further inland than she usually did, in hopes of finding food more diverse than fish, and had taken her cloak with her. Mother did not let Elspeth move come. Mother did not let Elspeth move her cloak. However, Mother always prefered to keep her cloak close. Elspeth had stayed right where she was, a cold child huddled on the sand, for a whole day before any living thing noticed.
Elspeth had fallen asleep waiting. A Cloakless girl, no older than Elspeth herself, crept silently forward.
