Elspeth was not cold anymore. For the first time in her life, she did not like the warmth - not when it came from the same untamed fire that had burned Mother so many times.
Mother always told her not to go near the Cloakless, but Elspeth had not listened. Mother had said they were dangerous, that they would trap you. As a child, of course she believed her mother. After all, Mother was covered in scars, old wounds from Cloakless lovers. Elspeth would never ask, but she frequently wondered how many Cloakless siblings she actually has.
She had thought Mother was wrong, but looking up at the Cloakless that would not let her leave, she had no doubt Mother had been right.
